What is the typical course load for a student? I was looking at suggested course schedules and they show quarters of 36-45 units. I read somewhere that the limit was in the 50's. Current students, how many units are you taking?

I took 43 first term, 51 last term, 39 next term.

I'd say 43 is an average load.

Something like 45 is probably an average load. The limit is from 36 - 54 (51 for frosh) but it is possible to underload (not good!) and overload (at your own peril!). I've taken 50, 51, 51, 42, 42, and currently enrolled for 54 next term.

I took 48 first term, 54 second term, and am signed up for 48 third term. I plan on taking 51 all next year, but that number will go down if 48 units on grades is too much of a struggle for me. Most frosh I know take a normal load first term, a heavy load second term (trying to cram in classes on pass/fail of course,) and then a normal load again third term.

I took 51, 54, 51, 36, 36, 54, 45, 54, (54 next term).
Frosh can't take more than 51 units without overloading ( unlike 54 for upperclassmen) which is somewhat anoying since most classes are 9 units. My overload petition was rejected first term frosh year (so I had to audit the remaining class I wanted to take) but approved the following term. I also had overload petitions for 63 units approved twice- but dropped back down to 54 both times).

51, 57, 42
60, 51, 51
54, 51, 54
61, 50, 45+DDay

This was probably heavier than average because I did two unrelated majors and took both band and orchestra for credit (3 units each) most terms.

Oddly enough thanks mostly to that I now have enough college music credits to be considered "highly qualified" as a music teacher according to the No Child Left Behind federal standards. ;-) That is a funny thought right there!

I'm a junior physics major.

51 51 45
48 48 48
45 36 36 (next term)

I have a couple very time intensive extracurriculars starting last term as well as research which should keep my units down at about ~20-30 units for all of senior year (I got 27 units placement credit so I need like 93 units to graduate in 4 terms).

Tech places too much emphasis on classes - don't make the mistake of sacrificing research early on to get up to 50+ units; it's just not necessary.

Yeah cghen makes a good point. I could've had a very light and more productive (research-wise) senior year but I decided as a sophomore to do the second major just for fun (because when else am I going to get to do that?). I just decided that studying medieval history for an engineer like me was a good way to use my free time.

That said, almost everyone finishes somehow or another with way, way more units than they need to graduate.

Junior applied physics major:

46 51 42
51 42 45
50 39 51
?? ?? ??

(average of around 46/term)
