Course loads

I don't know if anyone has already asked this but what is the maximum # of classes we can take as freshmen? Per semester. Is it 4 or 5?

I think that five is already more than sufficient. Why would you want to take any more than that?

You have to have special permission to do five courses first semester, at least. Not sure if that applies to second semester. After freshman year, you can technically sign up for six (though most end up dropping one or two), although scheduling becomes a serious pain in the arse (especially with precepts).

So the answer to my question is 4, and 5 with permission. Do the seminars count as a class or is it four in addition to them?

Seminars count since they're actual classes.

I think someone said 1 seminar = 3 credit hours

Does Princeton do hours? I've always heard everything described in units (as in actual courses).

I dunno - I found it in the Princeton 09 subforum...here:

Princeton is run by units. That means that you get the same amount of credit for a lab class as for a seminar. Very few people take 5 classes fall of freshman year, and I would definately recommend only taking 4. You dont know how hard the work is, plus it gives you a chance to adjust. A lot of people, especially pre-meds, take 5 classes in the spring of their freshman year. Its technically possible to take 6 classes a semester, but that's a lot of time in class, which means less time for ecs or for homework

how long are classes?

50 minutes? an hour?

I think its:
Lectures: 50 min
Freshman Seminars: 3 hours
Precepts: 1-2 hours

hmm, is it true that that new integrated course has a problem solving class that goes on for 6 hours? that's mildly intense.

seminars are 3 hours?! wow...
coming from a school with 40 minute periods, doubles are torturous enough...I better go fix that concentration problem =/

I'm sure you can do four classes + an art though?

Yeah, FRSes are 3 hours, but only one day a week. So...for non-ADD people, it's awesome, but for the rest of us folk'uns who haven't mastered the art of focus and concentration yet...crazy shriek

You can take five classes, but you have to have permission to do so fall semester no matter what it is, according to the UA. Besides, from what I hear, four is more than enough. Oh joy! Kitschin' workloads! :D

3 hours? Hmmph. I've had 5 hour classes before and they started at 6 am...OK so 2 hours were lab (where I wreaked havoc) but whatever :p
