Course Requirement Question

If you dont have to take any specific amount of classes, does that mean you can graduate Brown in 3 years? (Or less?)

You do have to take a specific amount of classes. 30 of them. If you can get those done before 4 years are over and you want to graduate early, I don't see what would be stopping you.

It also depends on your concentration. There are course requirements for individual majors. Some have more than others.

You can only graduate early after passing a certain number of APs or the IB, even then you still have to take 30 courses, and even then I'm relatively certain you're obligated to pay for 8 semesters.

And beyond that, you really shouldn't rush undergrad. Work with the Financial Aid office if it's an affordability thing-- they've been great with me.

Anyway it's a requirement to attempt 32 courses, and with 5 being max per semester, you'd still need 7 semesters at least

I know a few people who finish their requirements early (3.5 semesters) by taking a larger course burden earlier on, and then use their last semester to do a special project away from campus. Many just keep taking courses, however, because the opportunity is too good to pass up.

modest is exactly correct, and anything that is contrary to his post is wrong.

There are two requirements at play here:

8 semester units, which are satisfied by paying for 8 semesters at Brown. These can be satisfied by using an adequate number of AP or IB credits (or other national exams), or transfer credits from another college.

30 courses, which are satisfied by taking and passing 30 courses. There is no requirement to attempt 32 courses. AP credits cannot be used to satisfy this requirement, but IB and other national exams and transfer credits can.

The two other requirements for graduation are:

You must fulfill the course requirements for a concentration.

You must be able to write good ( :-P ).

Brown's site says that as long as you pay for 8 semesters and finish your credit and concentration requirement you can finish early.
