Course Schedule & Registration

Do both start/come out on August 1? I'm curious as to why Stanford doesn't release the Autumn quarter schedule earlier.

Undergraduate classes begin on September 23rd. I believe Axxess opens on August 1st, almost 2 months before classes begin. They may publish class information on Explore Courses before Axxess opens (I never checked until later), but I’d the vast majority of the listed classes for 2012-2013 to also be available for 2013-2014, so one could make rough plans using the old 2012-13 course list. Why do you want to plan/enroll more than 2 months early?

I don’t know, I thought it’d make sense to release the schedule before registration opens.* But yes, I will use the 2012-2013 schedule as a rough guide.

*I’m coming from another college where fall registration usually occurred in March/April of that year (with the schedules being released a few months before then).

On another note, is it generally easy to get into classes? Like, would I have to make sure I register for everything on August 1, right when registration opens?

If you can get on Axess the fall course schedule seems to be available on SimpleEnroll and lets you “plan” your schedule in advance

Thanks for that tip! I can indeed see the schedule!

Do you see a hold on registration? Freshmen usually can’t complete registration until they meet with an advisor during orientation week.

I’m a transfer student and I think transfers do have a hold until orientation unless you email the adviser before then (in which case, you can register on Aug 1).

I just wanted to see the schedule of classes so I know what I’m taking before registration opening.

Yeah, this is a weird one to get used to. Coming from a state-funded school, I was accustomed to staying up until 3 AM two months before the coming quarter, waiting for classes to get posted, only to see them all full by 3:01 AM; that kind of thing isn’t the case at Stanford though. Unless it’s an IntroSem, which are very exclusive and must be applied for (applying for a class, another weird concept), most courses will have room available.

IIRC, as a transfer, I registered for classes during NSO and had absolutely no problem doing so. Don’t worry too much about knowing the schedule before registration, and don’t feel rushed to get your classes.

Yes, I usually waited until arriving on campus before registering for classes. I don’t recall ever not being able to attend a class because of limited space. There are a few rare exceptions that can fill up quickly, such as the Intro Sems classes mentioned above and classes that have limited resources (for example, Surgery 101, which involves cadavers).

For purposes of classes for which you need to apply, how does that work? (when does the application start, deadline?, review date?)

Also, does Axess open at some random time (or is it like 12 AM Pacific Time)?
