im going to be a junior, and my guidance counselor emailed me today (convieniently less than 15 days before school starts) and told me i had a scheduling conflict - ap physics b (2 periods) and adv spanish meet at the same time. heres what im taking now:

AP calc AB
AP english
AP gov and politics
journalism
and then 3 more spaces

instead of physics b, i could take ap bio or ap chem - but ap bio may be full and i dont really want to take ap chem.

on the other hadn i could take phys b and then ap seminar or latin

or i could take honors physics, AP Pyschology, and either seminar/latin/adv spanish

advice? its my junior year so i want my schedule to be as impressive as possible, but also somewhat doable. thankss!

Which option do you like the best?

Depends on your major. Are you math/science or humanities/social science? I would recommend staying with the track which will give you the better gpa. Staying in Spanish (so as to not miss a year would be a good bet), then taking AP Physics senior year would be my suggestion. AP Bio may not be your favorite option, but you could take it now, and then go into AP Physics later.

thanks for the suggestions.

littlegreenmom - im definitely more of a humanities person (have aspirations of penning a few short stories/novels in lifetime) , but im still quite good at math + science despite my vigorous distate.

japanmedlover - thats the thing, i dont know! i want ot stay competitive (im top 5 in class, and mostly everyone around me is taking 4-5 aps)

I'd try not to completely knock foreign language, but otherwise pick the option with the classes you could see yourself happily in.

inconvienient nothing. I had a scheduling conflict last year and I found out a nice 5 days before school was to start.

The good thing about AP Physics B is that, at all of the schools I've researched, they are usually worth a LOT of credits. But some schools give a lot for foriegn lang too.

Do yourself a favor and download the AP list at each college you are considering and what they offer in terms of units/credits, and what score is required to get waived. Depending upon your future major, you may not be able to count some classes towards your major, but may get GE credit/elective credit, instead.

Niece took 8 AP's and got 4's or 5's on all of them. Only two counted towards credit for her at Georgetown because of her major.

Every college is different, but this might help you make your decision, once you see what you can take, and what score you must get, to get credit.

thanks again for the suggestions everyone

i've looked up few of the ivies and they generally give credit to a 4 or a 5 on the AP language (which i would take in my senior year if i took adv spanish this year). some take physics b, others dont. im looking at HYP/ives and some liberal arts schools schools, which generally dont give much credit anyway. this is more in terms of a college admissions standpoint.

i think im kind of leaning towards physics b and latin or seminar. friends have told me the highest grade in the ap/adv spanish class last year (both were one class and best students only managed 3s and the rare 4) was around a low A so I think physics is the safer bet.

now the other question is that is taking a seminar period generally looked down upon? a friend who is going to yale took it in both junior and senior years, but im stuck in an oddly competitive class where absolutely no one is taking it in favor of another AP class to boost gpa (1.1 bonus).
