Course selection for CALS/Engineering?

So here’s the situation:

Entering as Environmental Engineering freshman through CALS. This is a hybrid program with CoE and will possibly double major or minor in MechE.

In terms of math, I made a 5 on AP Calc AB, which puts me into 1910. Couldn’t take BC. Is it possible to self-study and test into 1920 during orientation week or just suck it up and hope for the best in 1910 despite poor course reviews?

For chemistry—CALS says take 2070; CoE says take 2090. I know they’re similar although 2090 is for engineering and as such those students are pre-enrolled. The secretary in the chem department says there will be very few places available for students not pre-enrolled because of budget cuts this year. Engineering advising suggested I take either 2090 or 2150 (honors) and it turns out they are using the exact same book (Zumdahl) I used in my AP chemistry class (although I only got a 4 on exam so can’t place out). Any reason not to take 2150?

Your thoughts and insights are greatly appreciated.

One more thing… CALS suggests freshmen in Env Eng take Biology but I got a 5 on that AP exam so won’t need to take it, which is why chem is on the table for fall. thx

I would suggest you take Chem 2150, it really is a great course that is well taught, interactive, and entertaining.

You could try self-studying to get into 1920, but you would be missing a lot of good review and new material. I don’t know why 1910 has bad reviews? I loved my grad student and I became a much better mathematician because of it. Yes, the tests were hard, but what does anyone expect?

Thanks chendrix!

This is the first really positive report I’ve heard about 1910. It’s not the hard work or tests that have me concerned rather it’s the possibility of it being poorly taught. I’m glad you had a good experience with your grad student. In truth, i would rather not spend the rest of my summer studying for 1920.

I’ve also heard great things about 2150 including all those things you mentioned. I believe Davis is the teacher.
