As a newcoming freshman I feel like I’m the only one concerned over which courses to select. My declared major is mechanical engineering (if that’s relevant) and I have a few questions:

Is there some sort of recommended list of courses a engineer should take?

What is the minimum credits per quarter for a person to remain eligible to transfer after two years?

How to calculate credit-hours?

Thank you in advance, I’d appreciate any help.

Try looking on the mechanical engineering site for their required courses, I know for biomedical they have the required courses and at picnic day they had sample 4 year schedules. If you can’t find anything email someone in that department

I was in a similar situation as far as feeling lost when choosing courses, (although I’m transferring in to UCD this year). I made an appointment with my major advisor, (not the peer counseling!), and it helped tremendously. I literally only spoke with the counselor for 15 minutes, but after that I knew exactly what classes I should be signing up for, how many credits where needed where, etc. My counselor gave me a tentative course schedule to follow for my major which your counselor can probably do for you. Have you done orientation yet?

@Charlie87star: Thanks for the suggestion bro, I’ll check it out.

@premedwannabe: Thanks for the response and relief, haha. I actually haven’t done orientation yet as mine is scheduled to be during august 8-10. Did you talk to your major advisor at your orientation? and how did you set up an appointment?

a pretty standard fall quarter schedule for entering engineers is something like chem 2a, math 21a, english 3, and either some kind of lower div engineering course or a random elective. or just the three. but you’re definitely going to want to take chem 2a and math 21a (at least - if you can go higher, then do it!) your first quarter as the series’ take a year each and it is best if they’re finished by the end of freshman year

Alright! Another Mech E! As a “late” joiner (I jumped ship from psych my second year) I THINK I’ve got the hang of it.

Aside from what others have told you, here’s some extra tips:

Take ENG 6 before 22A so that you won’t need to rip your hair out doing the godawful 22A lab via SSH.

Take EME 50 ASAP. This is one of those courses that fills up in ten minutes so it’s best to take when you see any open slots.

Here are some useful worksheets. You probably won’t need them for a while, but it’s worth having.
