Hello. I am a junior student who wants to major in business in college and possibly become a corporate lawyer if everything goes as planned. I am currently doing my course selection for next year and I need help. I am going to take three APs this year: art history, english language, and us history. For next year, I am planning on taking english literature, gov, stats, and spanish. I am qualified for calculus BC but I am not sure whether I should take that instead of calculus AB and I am a weak science student. I finished all my science requirements without taking a single science AP so the only science course I can take is Engineering, which I’m not sure I should take. It doesn’t have any relevance to my major, but I’ve heard that taking only three years of science is bad. I don’t know what to do. Does anyone know about this? Thank you!
Calculus AB will be absolutely fine. Is there no honors or regular science class such as Earth Science, Marine Science, Environmental Science…? If not, it is what it is.
AP Lit, AP Gov, AP Stats, AP Spanish, Calc AB, and a free period would be perfectly fine. Or, alternatively, Lit, Gov, Spanish, Calc, and stats is replaced with an easy science class.
If you truly want to go to law school, make sure you minor (or double major) in a major with lots of reading and writing, plus logic (Philosophy is good, but political science or history or English with 1-2 philosophy classes works too).
In my school, the science courses that are available to me are:
Engineering Innovation and Design Honors
Anatomy and Physiology
that is all, so I decided not to take a science course
But, after talking about it with my parents, I’ve decided to drop the Stats AP and take a financial management class, which will be related to my business major. I can take Principles of Business I and II which are both semester courses which can replace Stats as well. What do you think?
Additional Info-This is what the course selection sheet says:
Financial Management is an essential course which provides the student with lifelong learning skills. Students will learn to become financially independent by maximizing their earning potential and developing strategies for managing their resources. It is critical that young women become empowered to make sound decisions concerning budgeting, banking, spending, saving and investing. Decisions in setting financial goals and making investments are the basis for this course.
The final project is a comprehensive portfolio which includes the student’s career direction, financial health and security, aspects of managing credit and debt, managing resources and personal risks. Computers will be used for research and in the preparation of a comprehensive portfolio.
Principals of Business I
This course covers business topics as preparatory learning for college-bound students. While it helps for other majors, it is recommended that students who are considering business as a college major enroll in this course. The goals of this course are: (1) To furnish the college-bound student with a background for future business courses and (2) To introduce basic business concepts that the college bound student may encounter in the future. The content of the course includes topics such as: Business and Its Environment; Forms of Business Ownership; Financial Records, Analysis and Services; Pricing and Promotion; Advertising; Marketing. Computers are an integral part of this class. Students will spend part of the semester managing a company using a web-based simulation. Students will also research prominent women in business today and will research the financial history of a business of their choosing.
Principals of Business II
This course will be a continuation and expansion of Principles of Business 1. Using a web based simulation, students will look in depth at the various aspects of a retail business, including pricing, inventory control and analyzing financial statements. We will be analyzing various corporations that have both succeeded and failed, and learning the causes and effects of the successes and failures. We will explore topics in business ethics and business law, and how they are being applied in today’s global environment. Throughout the class we will be developing a deeper understanding of how technology is used in business, expanding on our knowledge of excel for interpreting data and making business decisions. Using Microsoft Access we will learn how databases are used and students will create their own database and use it to solve for various business situations. This will be a project based course. Prerequisites are Principles of Business I.
Thank you so much for your help
Financial management will be easy and useful. It’ll introduce basic principles of business and will likely be little work, so if you find your schedule heavy it’d be a good class to have.
Otherwise, Principles of Business 1&2 is likely easy but a bit less so thatn Financial Management. It’ll be a gentle introduction to what you may take your first semester in college.
Thank you so much!!!
