I've been trying to decide what courses to take because I honestly don't know what I want to do with my life.

I know I definitely want to improve my writing because I haven't had a decent English teacher since freshman year (in junior year we didn't even write any essays! The teacher was nice, but my writing skills now suck). I wanted to take the Creative Writing class, but then I thought the Writing 111 class might be better. Is the Writing 111 course required? Would the creative writing class or the Writing 111 class be more beneficial for me? Would the creative writing fulfill any gen ed requirements?

I would also like to take French, Calculus, and intro Latin, and I was thinking of a science - either bio or chem. How many classes can we take?

Also...does anyone have any suggestions for classes/professors to try and get?

ill assume youre a freshmen.
look into the basic classes that you have to take : language, science, writing ( there are o, j and w classes) and you could add in a physical or wellness class. bing has the requirements online

If you took AP Language, it’s a waste to take Writ 111 (that’s really all it is) although, since you said you want a refresher, take it. It fulfills a “J” which is both Oral (“O”) and Written (“W”) gen ed requirements. If you are in Harpur, you will need to take more to fulfill the Writing requirements of the college. The creative writing class is for English majors only (or so I’ve heard, as far as I know… don’t quote me on that) and is extremely difficult to get into. Writ 111 is better for revisiting the basic reading, writing and researching skills you will need for college.

As for a foreign language, unless you plan on academia, law or medicine, take French. Latin is only useful for those fields and I’ve heard the class is rather difficult. If you have time after completing major requirements, then go and take Latin but don’t do it freshman year.

As for sciences, take biology unless you need to take chem for your major (or if you like it better). Chem has an enormous time requirement (lecture 3 hours, discussion section/exam time, 1 hour plus, and a three hour plus lab every week). I don’t think bio is the same but again I’m not sure. The intro science classes are weeder courses so they are difficult. Be prepared for a lower grade than you wanted.

Calculus or Math 220 (I think that’s the number…) requires a placement test that you will take at orientation. It is also intensive. I don’t recommend doing both a science and calc in the same semester unless that your strength. My friend did this, it wasn’t a fun semester.

As an entering freshman, you can only take up to 18 credits which is four four credit classes and a small two credit course. You cannot overload any more than that. Most people only take four courses anyway. Again, if you’re an entering freshman, I would just stick to four courses so you can get used to being away at school.

Cloudyafternoons… you may want to check out www.ratemyprofessors.com for the professor suggestions.

^^^
I second that. Take courses only from professors with good ratings, unless that professor is the only professor available for that course. As you progress through college, you’ll find there are many professors who are stingy with grades, and then there are those who give A’s out like no tomorrow. Do yourself a favor and stick with the latter.

If you have no idea what to take, I’d HIGHLY recommend ECON 160: Microeconomics with Lockard. Easiest A ever, pretty interesting class, gets rid of your Social Science requirement, and is a prerequisite to ECON/business courses.

For the math requirement, MATH 147: Statistics with Klimko is also another easy A. There’s no screening test involved, and the material is much easier than the AP Statistics exam.

If you want to see a really interesting professor, take THEA 102 with Oakes. Oakes is a one-of-a-kind professor; you’ll never have another professor like him in your life. But be warned, the class is pretty tough, and is NOT an easy A. But I thought his uniqueness was worth forgoing the easy A.
