Course Validation at USNA

Teachers are starting to ask whether we want to take the A.P. tests for subjects- I was wondering whether the AP scores help with course validation or whether it is all based on validation tests you take once you get there?

Here is a link:

Take the AP tests. They do help validate certain courses like English and will enable you to take USNA validation tests in Math and Science. My son got a 4 on both the AB and BC Calc AP tests and that allowed him to take the test to validate the first 2 semesters of Calc at the Academy. Since he's planning on majoring in history, he's taking his final math class as a second semester plebe while most history majors take this class at the beginning of their youngster year. He got a 5 on the AP Lang/Comp test and validated the first semester of English, got a 5 on the US History AP and was put in an Honors Government Course. It made for a challenging first semester, but it did help pull him ahead in credits. He didn't validate Chemistry because he fell asleep during the test! All the validation tests are done during Plebe summer so you can imagine how tired everyone is!

FYI
The class of '08 took the validation tests at the beginning of Plebe summer, rather than later on as had been the practice.

And yes, take those AP exams. High scores will help mids to validate out of courses.
CM

Every plebe takes validation exams for calc, chem, physics, and english. They are done within the first week of summer, and help the academic department place plebes in the most suitable class track. some who do well on calc validate, others have it only 3 times a week, some have 4 or even 5 periods.

Getting high grades on AP exams will help you get in , but they dont use those to validate courses. You have to validate the academy's exam. If you validate the first semester of calc, they let you take the calc 2 exam. if you pass that, you keep going until you get placed in a class.

take it from an '08 mid.

Thanks motivator!
