So I have taken three AP tests my first 3 years of high school, but am not taking one this year. So how do I send the academy my AP scores if i am not taking an AP test this year? Also, I scored a 5 on Spanish Language, will they test me again or do i automatically get credit? And i took AP Calc as a junior and got a 4 on the BC test. I audited the class again this year so that i could stay fresh with math. Will they let me go into Calc I again? I know i could validate calc 2 with my AP score, but i don't want to get overwhelmed plebe year... Thanks for the help!

you will take an online math placement test before arriving for plebe summer. with this you can validate 1 or 2 semesters of calculus. other validation tests will be given during the early part of plebe summer including foreign language exams.

A very similar question was answered within the past few weeks. See the following thread for validation details and links:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/naval-academy-annapolis/635842-summer-examinations.html?highlight=validation

i guess what im really asking is if i do well on the placement test and validate I, II or both, and want to retake the class anyways. will they let me do that?

yes. some do and some don’t. my son validated 1 semester of chem and started in chem 2 at the academy. he has mixed feelings about his decision. since chem is the “plebe Killer,” he only suffered one semester of it. however, he thinks that chem 2 would have been easier if he had done chem 1 at the academy instead of relying on his high school general chemistry from 10th grade.

the more classes you validate and actually start in the next class, the less pressure you have to overload some of those more difficult classes. you’ll still need to take the same number of credit hours while there (not counting the validated courses), but it will give you room in your schedule to double major or minor in a second subject.

For calc they let you decide if you want to use your validations or not. But I really recommend that you do because of the oppurunities it opens up for you (Minors, masters degrees). Also, if you have a good foundation in Calc 1 and 2, Calc 3 should not be that difficult for you.

As for spanish I know that everyone is requried to take the language validation test during the summer. You can validate up to 2 years, 4 semesters making it much easier to get a minor. Im not sure if they take AP credits, but I would assume they do.

okay, thanks for the help. i guess i will just have to see if i validate anything, then take it from there. i sure hope they take my AP spanish score. i can recall reading on another thread that there was a link to a USNA page that talked about AP credit usage. i took the AP spanish freshman year and haven’t taken spanish since! im not so sure i would do well on any sort of validation test now…

Heres the link i was refering too:

[USNA Course Validation Policy](http://www.usna.edu/acdean/candidateinfo/USNACourseValidationPolicy.htm)

I haven’t been on here since before my own I-Day… but anyway, here’s some advice from a current 4/C:

If you got a 4 on the Calc BC, you will probably validate the Calc II validation exam. I would recommend taking Calc III fall semester if you validate because then you can opt to have spring semester without a math course, which will give you more time to focus on Chem II. Or you can finish up with math completely (taking Differential Equations spring semester) and have no math courses youngster year.

You will take a spanish exam over plebe summer. I only got a 3 on the AP test, but I validated 4 semesters (2 years) of spanish, and now I don’t have to take any language classes. Validating a language only affects your roster if 1) you are a humanities (group 3) major, in which you will be required to take 4 semesters of a language, 2) you major in a language, or 3) you minor in it. If you are a math/science/engineering major, you won’t have to take any language classes UNLESS you minor (or if you’re crazy enough to double major?).

One point to add to gonecokanutts comments: even if you are a science major, you may be able to use validated language classes to fulfill some slots in your course matrix. My daughter also validated four semesters of a language, and she has said that her course matrix shows the third and fourth semesters of language filling slots in later years. She was also a bit nervous about moving ahead and being too loaded, but the validations landed her in courses that were just about right for her. My suggestion would be, if the validation exams clearly place you at a certain level, take what they recommend. If your scores are borderline, you can choose to take the lower level class when you meet with your advisor.
