I just backpacked 2 courses that are full, and I'm second on the waitlist for both. I backpacked one English 125 and one English 124.

If 2 spots open up in one of them, will I automatically be placed in? Will it then email me to let me know? What if no spots open up? Should I show up to the first day of classes? Will most professors let you in?

You receive an e-mail letting you know a spot has opened up in the course, and that you should either register for the class with an override or give up your position on the waitlist. I can't remember if they only send out the override permission to the first person on the waitlist, or to the first n people on the waitlist if n spots are available, but I think it's the first situation.

In any case, if you really want to take one of those classes, it's a good idea to show up on the first day and let them know you want to take the class. Many times teachers won't have a problem giving out overrides and going over the suggested course size limit. If the class size is a little over 30 and taught by a graduate student, there might be the issue of going over a class limit set by the GSO, which isn't flexible.
