Courses for Stern sophomore Transfer

Hi,

I will be attending college in US this fall. I am enrolled in a private LAC. I want to apply to Stern for fall of 2011. I would be considered an international non-aid transfer applicant by Stern. Stern requires Calc1, Microeconomics, expository writing, stats and accounts. My current college, Bryn Mawr does not offer accounting classes. i don't know if i ll be able to take them at UPenn. Will I be disadvantaged among the pool of Stern applicants?

What classifies as an expository writing course?

My high school stats are as follows

O-Levels (fresh and soph years): straight As
English-96
Maths-97
Economics-97
Accounting-98
Business Studies-97
Pakistan Studies-97
Islamiyat-95
Urdu-91

AS-Levls (junior year):
Maths-A
Accounting-A
Economics-A
Business Studies-A

A-Levls (senior yr): Same subjects as AS-Levels. The result is pending.

Awards:

Full scholarship from school for both AS and A-levels
4 Academics Awards from school for O-Levels.
World Distinction in Accounting AS-Level 2009 (along with a small cash prize from University of Cambridge International Examinations)
Regional Distinction for scoring the highest overall in AS 2009: Best Across Three and Four AS-Levels.
I got an academic award from my school for both the distinctions.

SAT1-2230 (M790, W800, V640)
SAT2-2370 (M1 800, M2 800, Physics 770)
TOEFL-111

I have never studied natural sciences in my high school but for my physics SAT, I had to study from the scratch. I took it in my senior year.

My Ecs are pretty weak. I belong to a very small rural town in Pakistan. There is nothing much to do outside school

ECs: Writer and Editor for School Magazine (4yrs), Cricket (4yrs), badminton (4yrs), school Prefect (2 years), headgirl runner-up, 2 internships in the xport and finance depts of two of the leading firms of the city, SOS Village volunteer (1yr), Assistant Maths and Econ teacher at school (2yrs), Counsellor for juniors (2 yrs)....several others

Do I stand a chance at Stern?

P.S: Is it harder to get in CAS or Stern as an external transfer?

BUMP

Please reply.

Bump

I just transferred to Stern and I didn’t take Stats or the Accounting classes. As long as there is a valid reason why you didn’t take the classes you should be fine. I actually took classes that would boost my GPA rather than follow the program at my old school. I’ve also heard that taking a few math classes and doing well helps (I did that too). As long as you do well first semester you should be fine. And I believe it is harder to transfer into Stern than CAS. Good luck

@Rob2391: Thanks a lot. You are the first poster on my thread.

What about the expository writing requirement?

It’s much harder to get into Stern than just regular CAS.

Well most colleges have some type of writing course and if it is one semester it satisfies a class called business an it’s publics, if it is two it satisfies writing the essay as well but I think you need to pass some writing exam. In my case it was one but I can put together a portfolio of my papers together in order to place out of the writing class.

This certainly helped. :)

As a current Stern sophomore I’ll try to answer some of your questions.

a) It’s much harder to get into Stern than any other school at NYU except Tisch. Stern and Tisch are the two most selective here, which is logical considering their top-5 status each.

b) You have a worse chance getting into Stern as a transfer student than as an incoming freshman. Although this is true for any school anywhere, it’s exceptionally fitting at Stern. Our curriculum is so significantly different from other schools, even other top-10 undergrad b-schools, that by default they vastly prefer accepting someone and educating them over a four-year progression than taking someone else who’s coming in with an educational background they can’t control.

c) Having quantitative coursework will definitely help your application. Stern does accept transfer students, but the ones I’ve talked to who joined my cohort as rising sophomores all either came from another competitive b-school (Tepper @ Carnegie Mellon, currently #7 to Stern’s #5, Bentley University [not sure of their ranking, still moderately prestigious]). If you’re able to take classes through Wharton to get accounting coursework, by all means, do it.

Hope this helps. If you’d like, you can visit my current thread to ask more: <a href=“Current Stern Sophomore: Ask Me - New York University - College Confidential Forums”>Current Stern Sophomore: Ask Me - New York University - College Confidential Forums;

@hellodocks: I really appreciate your detailed response. But I took a full-on business courseload throughout high school. Besides that, i am doing good in college and trying hard to get into penn’s accounting class for next semester.

Best of luck then. Try to do what you can to get approved into a class at Wharton. That will definitely help your application, especially because it’s due in March(?) and you won’t be able to list your spring classes as being completed since they won’t be on your transcript.

And to be frank, nearly every admissions rep I’ve spoken with or heard from says that coursework within high school does not factor that highly into the application. It’s very often centered around the essays, the GPA, and the extracurriculars. Best of luck!
