Hi! I’m applying for college this year, and I am still trying to decide whether I should apply to Columbia or not.
I love Columbia because of it’s Core Curriculum, but I’m also curious about the amount of freedom students are allowed in choosing the courses they want to take.
If a student decides to major in Biomedical Engineering(like I’m planning to), can they only take electives related to Biomedical Engineering? Can students take classes related to other departments? How many electives can they take?
I know that’s a lot of questions but I couldn’t get a satisfactory answer from the university’s website
Answers from current students would be great! Thanks
I am not a current student at Columbia, by any means, however I did find some information on the Biomedical Engineering program! Each degree usually has a published “track” and Biomed is no exception.
It seems that the Biomed track allows for three Nontechnical electives of your choice! This may not be enough to get a minor via engineering plus, but it would give you the opportunity to explore some other interests.
You are allowed to take any courses you want and any electives you want as long as you fulfill your major requirements and your degree requirements. At Columbua, most students take 5-6 courses per semester, so there is plenty of opportunity for electives.
