I'm trying to figure out courses and such, and was wondering what are the mandatory first year courses, and how many courses do we get to choose?

You should know that the answers to such questions are usually in our trusty courses of study guide…

[Courses of Study 2008-2009: College of Engineering](http://www.cuinfo.cornell.edu/Academic/Courses/CoScollege.php?college=ENG)

This is what it says:

First-Year Requirements

During the first year, engineering students are expected to complete (or receive credit for) the following core requirements:

• MATH 1910 and 1920
• Two of: CHEM 2090, 2080, PHYS 1112, 2213, 2214* (or the Honors equivalent)
• One of: CS 111X
• Two first-year writing seminars
• One introduction to engineering (ENGRI) course
• Two physical education courses

Assuming you do not have any AP/IB courses, there are only 4 real courses per semester?
I’m from Canada and in engineering programs here, there are often upwards of 6 courses a semester. Do cornell students regularly take more than these? Can someone maybe put up a sample timetable?

I remembered seeing a sample timetable at cornell days. The study guide ray posted didn’t really answer anything.

Hey hellogoodbye (i love that band!)

As an engineering student your probably going to take mostly required courses your first semester. Math and sciences are normally 4 credits each, freshman writing classes are 3 credits, PE is 1 credit, and CS or intro engin courses are 4 or 3 more credits. That means you’ll noramally be taking 16 or 17 credits your first semester. It is a good amount of credits to start when your first making your adjustment to the university. In the end most engineering students will end up with 4 main classes during this time.

If you don’t use any AP credit and don’t place out of classes, your first semester will be:
Math 1910, Chem 2090, Freshman writing seminar, PE, and CS or an intro to engineering class.

Hope this helps!

you don’t have to take PE your first year if you don’t want to, or even chem (depending on your major). If you feel you can handle it, you can take CS and your intro class at the same time.

my 1st semester schedule was: math 192, chem 209 (but it was a much harder class then), CS100J, my FWS, and ENGRI 115 (OR)

my 2nd semester was: math 294, phys 213, cs 211, chem 208, and my FWS.

(sorry I don’t know the new numbers)

4 classes in engineering will be plenty, I guarantee you.
