Courses taking at a CC for UC to UC transfer

Sorry the title is kind of confusing. So basically I'm a freshman who's planning to apply as a transfer to UCB from UCSD next fall. The thing is I will be taking about 2 classes at a CC nearby because UCSD doesn't offer the equivalences to those courses. Berkeley says those courses have to be taken for letter grade. It's kind of weird because the grades of those courses will NOT count towards my UC GPA when I transfer, so I dont know if the "taking for letter grade" only applies to CCC students.

If they apply to everyone and I"m taking them for letter grade too, then do I need to try my best to get A's in them? (or would a B/B+ will do since it doesn't count towards my UC GPA in any case). Thank you!

And also 1 small question, is it really better if I take/complete the "core courses" before Fall (before I transfer) than if I complete them by Spring? or does it not matter when I take them as long as I complete them before I transfer? Thanks

Well since they say they’re taking the letter grade I would assume that means you should do the best you can in the courses.

To answer your 2nd question: You should really try to finish those core courses by the spring before you transfer. Ideally, you would have them all done by the end of this fall because those are the last grades UCB will see. Thus, strive to finish by the end of this fall and if not, aim to finish whatever remains in the spring.

To answer your first question: Do as well as you can in those 2 courses (i.e. preferrably A’s). Those classes/grades, which I am assuming are prereqs, will serve as part of your evaluation when UCB reviews your transcripts. The better you do in the prereqs, the better chance you have of getting in.

Btw why are you leaving UCSD for UCB? I’m just curious; I like both schools alot.

thanks guys! well about why i want to transfer, I dont know. It all started with me wanting to have a transfer to cal plan as a motivation to study hard in my 1st year here. Then I end up doing well here and i got more serious about transferring. I mean I love it here and if i dont make it to Cal I would still love to be at UCSD. but Cal has been my dream school since I was in 10th grade, and theres a big chance I will be coming back to Asia to work after graduation and Cal is pretty popular there so it might help in that sense.

Ahh I see ok. Yeah, that makes alot of sense. Me too! Cal’s been my dream school since I was a little kid. I wish ya luck!
