Hey all,
gonna be a freshman at UCI this fall, which follows the quarter system. i'm so far lined up to take a humanities lecture + discussion, general chem lec +dis+lab and intro bio (might add one more class). i did terrible in hs gpa wise (3.2), but i had decent SAT scores (2200) and good ECs. i'd like to go to washu, nw, or penn next year, so i'll probably have to retake my SAT I. I have pretty compelling reasons for transfer, as all 3 of them offer a particular major that uci doens't have. question is, is my courseload enough, granted that i can keep a high 3.9 or maybe 4.0 gpa to get me into those schools. i made the mistake of not having really worked on my esssays last time, which is something i wo'nt do now. anyone care to give me feedback?

bump.......

bump.......

i'd say that's a good courseload...just be sure to take classes you need (no blow offs) and to work hard for that 3.9 or 4.0. Your chances at those schools from UCI would be very good. Good luck.

thanks. should i retake the SAT I and II? also, anything else you guys can think of to make my app better?

your class schedule is exactly the same as my friend's when she started UCI last year, she is going to be a sophomore this fall though.

I really dunno...in my case, I'm coming from a CC so the SAT helps reinforce my high GPA and in a sense, prove it. Coming from UCI, I'm not so sure a high GPA from that school needs any reinforcing. I'd only take the SAT/SATIIs if you had time and it didn't interfere with more important things for transfers (grades,ECs,setting up good recs).

Check to see if SAT IIs are required. If not, then don't bother. I know that Penn doesn't require SAT IIs, don't know about the others tho. Your SAT I is great, so don't worry about it...Unless you feel some overwhelming need to retake it.

yeah im just worried that even a high college gpa won't be enough to offset my poor HS record. i took challenging classes and all that but i guess i dind't try enough, hence my **** gpa. will those colleges be willing to overlook that though you think?

oh also is columbia a reach given my situation as well? i/ve been reading up ontheir programs and i like what i see...

bump......

The more time you spend in college the less your HS record will matter because you will have a more-established college record. So my advice would be to spend 2 years in college, get great grades, and then try to transfer out if you still don't like it there.

to answer your question, transferring into columbia is difficult for anyone and always a reach given the incredibly low rate, it's worth a shot, but you'll need insanely good reasons for transferring and an awesome GPA. Good luck.

Yea, all you can do is get the highest GPA possible, taking the toughest courseload possible, and hope for the best. It really is a crapshoot, even for those with a 4.0. Best of luck to you though.
