Coursework

nvm sorry for that. found it

If I understand BDM correctly, alot of med schools don’t/didn’t take AP credit. So does this still hold true? Do i have to retake physics/take a higher level physics in college? Because for other classes, bio/chem/math, I have to take a higher level of that for my major anyways. But really? Another year of physics? yuck.

Hey BDM. I’m attending Northwestern in the fall and I was wondering if you could help me with a study abroad problem. I’m planning on majoring in Biology with a minor in Global Health. Part of fulfilling my minor requires me to study abroad (most students do this in spring of junior year) but from what I can gather, that is like the main time students take the MCAT and apply to medschool. If I’m taking Chem and Calc freshman year, Bio and Orgo sophomore year. I will be leaving in march, coming back in august. Should I stay on campus and take physics during the summer after my sophomore year? Then take the MCAT in august? What would my schedule be like for applying to schools? Is this possible or should I not study abroad in spring of my junior year?

Can you do fall of junior year?

Hi BDM,

I have a 5 in Chem and Bio and am expecting a 5 in Calc BC.
I would like your advice on taking the following courses 1st semester for a premed track:

Honors gen Bio
Honors gen Chem
Honors Calc III
Nutrition
Intro Athletic Training
Some Seminar
=17 hours w/out chem lab, 19 w/ chem lab

Also, what do you think about getting a physics minor and a molecular biology minor on top of a biochemistry and zoology double major?

I don’t know anything about these classes or your school. As a general rule, Nutrition and Athletic Training are not appropriate classes for a premed; taking them in addition to a normal courseload might be okay. Minors don’t matter.

the problem is that the study-abroad program i want to do is only offered spring quarter…

Do they offer it during the summer?

quick question: does intro bio help you on the MCATs? i’m wondering if i should opt out (instead of pushing it back to snr yr) of a semester of the plant-related/evolutionary bio and take the other one only. would this hurt me in terms of MCAT preparation?

Any thoughts/insight would be greatly appreciated.

No, you’d be fine. You’ll need a year for medical schools, but you could take something better like genetics or physiology or something.

I was thinking of majoring in Economics next year but have recently thought about going undeclared for the first semester or two. I was thinking I’d have plenty of time to complete the Economics major coursework later on and that pre-med becomes less demanding junior and senior year (obviously because you should be done by then). Can I get someone’s opinion on how hard it is to juggle 3-4 core classes in college? Especially at the beginning when you are adjusting to college life. I plan to do intramural basketball, club tennis, and be in the Habitat for Humanity club. I plan on taking Chem/Bio + labs, a 1 credit course, a gen-ed class, and either the 1st semester Econ class (if I go econ major) or a gen-ed class…

I’m just not sure how hard it is to adjust, I know it is different for everyone and I think I’ll be able to handle it. Also everyone says these econ teachers are extremely hard (our business dpt is very good). But then again I know grades/easiness varies and is dependent on competition.

I just don’t want to dig deep into something and then regret it. I think I am going to go undeclared for a little while if people here agree with me. What do you all think?

I’m hoping someone can help me out here! I’m going to be a freshman in the fall and I get credit for one year of inorganic chem due to my IB scores. I know one of the pre-req’s for med school is a year of inorganic chem, and a lot of med schools say not to retake courses that you’ve received AP/IB credit for. They also say that AP/IB credit doesn’t cover the med school requirement for chemistry. What do i take to fulfill the inorganic chem requirement then?

Please name one.

sorry, i should’ve said some medical schools, lol - that’s my bad habit of exaggeration kicking in!
The reason i said that is because i was looking at the requirements for the University of Minnesota’s medical school (as im a freshman at UMN), and they say specifically not to retake courses that you’ve earned AP/IB credit for. I am looking at other schools’ requirements–JH for example–says “Applicants with acceptable AP credit for general chemistry must take one additional semester of college chemistry with lab.”

I kind of assumed (correct me if I’m wrong) that JH doesn’t want you to retake courses you earned credit for through AP’s too, and that’s why they said to just take an advanced gen chem class + lab. I also thought that it wouldn’t look very good to be retaking courses you earned credit for anyway.

I’m super confused now though; do you mean to imply that I could (and maybe should?) just ignore the credit i earn from IB? Are we allowed to just “not accept” the credit?

If not, can you suggest to me what I can do to fulfill the chem requirement? I did read that one should avoid p-chem and a-chem…

thanks again, your help is much appreciated :)

Norabelle, it is very common for students to retake courses for which they have already received credit through IB/AP courses. Some probably feel doing that will help their GPA but some do it because their major advisors feel that high school chem is not equivalent to their college course and they wish their students to be trained their way.

I can’t imagine why a med school would care if a student already had IB/AP as most only require the two gen chem courses and then two organic.

Minnesota appears to diverge from the norm of two gen chem , two organic chem being required. Substantially. Check their site.

They go on to say

For most medical schools that I’m aware of you need two gen chem and two organic. If you want to apply broadly, I’d satisfy those requirements.

Hmm–I think ill take gen chem again. I don’t know why UMN’s med school has to be so picky with the AP/IB thing, but I don’t know if ill be going there for med school anyway. I’ll definitely discuss this more with my pre-med advisor though. Your input has helped a lot! thank you :)

However, if i do end up taking the gen chem that I receive IB credit for, am I basically screwing my chances at applying to UMN?

I apologize if this question has been asked before, I read the first 4 pages and didn’t see it.

I used IB credit for my first semester of general chemistry. What upperlevel chem classes could I use to satisfy the requirement instead? I have taken Biochem, but I know many schools have that as an additional requirement. Would taking Advanced Biochemistry be sufficient?

That question can best be answered by e-mailing the UMN med school itself. Good luck.
