Courtyard apartments?

Anyone know anything about the Courtyard apartments or any other off campus apartment complexes?

I’ve never been inside the Courtyard apartments so everything I type here is hearsay from my daughter who has a friend living there. They offer many amenities. My daughter’s friend lives in a 4 bedroom, 2 bath unit with 3 other girls. (Two of whom she knew, one who was placed there by the complex.) They have a washer/dryer and a bath tub (not just a shower) in the unit. Internet, cable, and heat are included in the rent but there is a surcharge for the heat if you exceed some amount. I’m not sure about electric. I’d imagine it is included because that seems to be the mo of the Courtyard. There is parking and I assume everyone gets a parking spot but I’m not sure. Each student pays his individual portion of the rent to the complex, but it is pricey. I’m not certain but I think I heard it’s about $750 a month per person.

My daughter lives in a townhouse on Haines Street, so just a block or so west of the Courtyard apartments. I think the complex is called University Commons. It is a 2 bedroom/2 bath (shower, no tub) townhouse. There are 4 of them living there, so 2 girls share a bedroom. They pay for all their utilities separately and have to work out how to split up the utility bills and the rent and who is responsible for seeing that they get paid on time. There are pay washers/dryers in a laundry building in the complex. They get two parking spaces in the complex parking lot. But because their unit faces Haines Street (not all the units do), two of them have gotten resident parking permits from the City of Newark (free) so that they can park on the street. Her share of the rent is just under $425 a month. With utilities, I guess it is around $500 a month.

Are you happy with University Commons? Does it seem to be in good shape?

She is happy there. I wish the place had nicer carpet. Oh, I should have mentioned that it was unfurnished. I think University Courtyard is furnished. The complex has installed a microwave and a flat screen TV since she moved in.

My daughter and her roommates took the unit over from friends who were graduating through a roommate change document with the complex. They did this because they wanted a unit that faced Haines Street for the parking. As a result, the complex didn’t come in and spruce the place up before they moved in. The girls painted themselves and shampooed the carpet.

It’s nice enough. I mean college kids have been living there!!! I told my husband I didn’t think her college apartment should be nicer than our house (University Courtyard may have been …LOL)
