Cousin copied my college essays

I am a student at Yale and I have a cousin who is a senior. A few days ago, he asked me if could read my essays, so to help him out, I sent all of my Yale essays and even my common app. I sent these to him 3 days ago when he told me he had no idea how to start his college essays but today, I heard from my aunt that he had already finished his app for Cornell. I suddenly had suspicions because only 3 days ago, he was asking me how to write a college essay and magically after i sent him my essays, he finished his app so I asked him questions and it turned out that he had copied my essays (he said he slightly changed them). At this point, i don't care if he doesn't get caught with it, but would I be in trouble for this???

I’m sure it’s happened before…not sure if the common app has a plagiarism check.

Depending on if the colleges use plagiarism checks (like turnitin), the most likely consequence would be that your cousin would be rejected by the schools he applies to using your essays. The Ivies, despite what you would think, are usually less likely to check for these things, but I would still strongly advise him against using your essays anywhere he hasn’t submitted to yet. Because there are so many applications, if he changed it enough, I don’t think they would catch it or you would be in any trouble. If he can’t get in on his own work though, it’s probably not the right place for him.
