Cousin has a 2.3 College GPA. Any CSUs he can probably get into?

Hi Guys,

I have a cousin who’s moving to California from Ohio.

He went to a Ohio community college and has a really Low 2.3 GPA because he’s been unmotivated which is why he is moving back here to California to give it another shot. The only universities I know that he can possibly get into are probably the California State Universities.

His major will probably be Kinesiology to get into Physical Therapy.

Do you guys know any CSUs that he can possible get into? And any advice on bumping up his GPA or how long is may take?

Since he is from OOS and not local, he will not have priority for any CSU but if he meets the minimum requirements, he might have a chance at the non-impacted CSU’s: CSU Channel Islands, East Bay, Stanislaus, Dominguez Hills and Bakersfield.

The applicant must complete at least 30 semester (45 quarter) units of general education courses. Visit www.assist.org for a full listing of courses at each California Community College that meet CSU general education requirements.
The applicant must complete transferable courses (CSU GE category A) with grades of C- or better in written communication, oral communication, and critical thinking.
The applicant must complete one transferable course (CSU GE category B4) with a grade of C- or better in mathematics or quantitative reasoning. The mathematics course is expected to have intermediate algebra as a prerequisite unless completion of category B is certified or the student has earned an Associate Degree for Transfer from a California Community College.
The applicant must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better in all transferable college units attempted.
The applicant is expected to be in good standing at the last college or university attended (i.e. eligible to re-enroll at that college or university).

Attending a local CA CCC for another 2 semester may help bump up his GPA, give him time to meet the required GE courses and major requirements needed to transfer.

Hi Grumbymom, Thank you.

Yes, first he will be moving to California to attend a community college first for probably 1-2 more years. Do you think that will heightened the chances of getting in schools such as CSU Long Beach, Fullerton or San Diego State?

With a 2.3 he won’t be competitive, but if he gets straight As or almost straight As that will show a strong upward trend. This is just hearsay, but I think upward trends tend to look really good to admissions offices.

If he works hard he can be a competitive candidate at a lot of the CSUs.

@JessTDiep - SDSU has become very competitive. I believe they denied 60,000 applications for those applying for the 2016-17 school term. Earlier this year, the university said that the average gpa for incoming freshmen has increased in the past 18 years from a 3.18 to 3.83. It seems to be even more competitive for community college transfers, especially those outside of SDSU’s local admission area for community colleges. If you visit SDSU’s forum on this website, there is a community college transfer thread that will give you quite a bit of statistical information about those students who were accepted and those who were not.

if he is relocating to CA, be sure he picks a CC that is ‘local’ to his target school.

^ This.
In addition, physical therapy is impacted everywhere, which means that even if he gets his act together he’ll have to get A’s (a few B’s) consistently in order to have a shot at *any * program.
