Cover letter - essential or not?

For the school I'm EDing to (Johns Hopkins) they don't have an essay or personal statement where they ask you why you want to apply to this school. Is it necessary to include a cover letter and explain that to them? (along with other stuff) Or would it be burdensome to the adcoms? Thanks for your opinions.

It's totally your choice. Some people believe that a well written cover letter explaining your interest in a college and providing an overview of your application may help you. Some believe it may make you seem as if you used a private consultant, and that may hurt you. It's totally up to you. There's an interesting discussion on this going on over in Parents Forum toward the end of the thread on writing college essays.
