Covid -- Additional Booster?

Remember that many of the vaccine adverse effects like myocarditis can be triggered by the actual virus infection.

Of the vaccines, the risk of myocarditis in younger men is highest with the original Moderna vaccine, which had the highest amount of mRNA and stimulated the highest antibody response (the Moderna boosters have less, but still more than Pfizer).

https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/full/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.122.059970 is a study comparing myocarditis risk of various vaccines (Astra Zeneca, Pfizer, Moderna) and SARS-CoV-2 infection, including age and gender groupings.

A male age <40 concerned about myocarditis may want to choose a non-Moderna vaccine.

Note that Moderna has a greater amount of mRNA and Pfizer and stimulates a greater antibody response. This is consistent with the suspected reason for myocarditis (possible similarity of virus proteins to heart proteins in some people results in antibodies that also stick to heart proteins), though it is also consistent with some observations of greater effectiveness of Moderna over Pfizer. Astra Zeneca (not available in the US) is similar to Janssen (no longer available in the US), but is given in two doses instead of one, and uses a different vector virus; these vaccines appear to stimulate T-cell response more than antibody response.

Interesting

I had my second booster in April because of my travel in May. I was over 60 with no other conditions. I went to CVS to get the booster, they didn’t have any issues with me getting the second booster (it was my 5th or 6th shot).
When the new vaccine come out in September I will be getting it with the regular flu shot.

Was it the bivalent?

When I saw my personal physician about vaccine requirements, she took the position that I had at least one risk factor (whose 60+ year old’s lab work comes back 100% perfect, and has optimum BMI?) and thus absolutely should get vaccinated/boosted every single time.
We had an unspoken understanding that this is what I had hoped to hear and that was the end of it.

I’ve used that as my moral justification to fill out the form accordingly.

Yes

There’s a big outbreak at my dad’s facility. They’ve closed the dining room and canceled group activities. Dad is OK so far.

It’s good they have cautions. Newer strains seem less severe but more contagious… but elderly have higher risk.

Three of H’s colleagues each have gotten covid in the past week. Two are at one agency, the third’s at a different one. None of them were in the office on the same day.

Am masking in public places again, and I’m not the only one.

Oh my. I will be attending a wedding in two weeks.

I am wondering whether to wait for the updated vaccine, or to jump ahead with a booster now. I had been thinking that I probably already have enough immunity to the old strains (five shots, one probable case of COVID, one additional known exposure with very mild symptoms), and that it would make sense to wait for the vaccine to be updated before getting another booster.

Yeah, we leave for S2’s wedding in Ukraine before the next booster is available. Yikes!

I’m at my daughter’s to help her after surgery.

Her fiancé came down with Covid yesterday.

My daughter, my and husband and I tested negative.

Daughter needs us to help so we are staying. The fiancé is quarantined in the basement.

Wish us luck :four_leaf_clover: :crossed_fingers:

i have a business trip on Monday in a large group setting. For all (at least 1/2 dozen) t trade shows post Covid I have attended before I have not caught Covid. This time I am not so sure. i dont intend on masking for a 10 hour day. But since I am the only one representing my company, at least before I go I need to avoid Covid. So this week I have laid low. No restaurants, events, etc. Biggest issue is that Sunday we have $$ tickets to a baseball game that we got a long time ago. Outdoors, but large crowd. 95+ temps. once again not a great situation to mask, so fingers crossed. If I “catch” covid on sunday or Monday (flight day), likely would start to feel it Tuesday/Wednesday. The bigger problem is my return flight Thursday . I would mask, but being on a plane, knowing I may have Covid seems yucky, but i may not have any other choice. City I am going to is VERY expensive.

Wish me luck…

Regarding plane travel, I still mask fully while in the airport and while on the plane, but for those of you who don’t, keep in mind that planes usually don’t have the air filtration/ventilation on when it’s on the ground, so consider wearing masks until the doors are closed and the plane’s pulled away from the gate. (Or just wear a mask the whole time.)

My daughter had no covid tests. I had brought one with us (I had a pouch with masks, a test kit, cold medicine that I threw in my suitcase at the last minute).

We went to CVS. You have to buy tests now, your insurance won’t reimburse you anymore.

25.00 for a two test box. We bought 3 boxes. Daughter will need to keep testing because she needs to get a paxlovid prescription if she tests positive.

I know why there is so much covid out there and why people aren’t testing. 12.50 a test! Crazy!

I even wear my N95 when I’m picking up international travelers (as in: family/friends who were elsewhere for a week+) - just in case they caught it in the last days, or during the return trip.

If they think that’s weird, then there is always the $120 limo option

I think you have totally hit the mail on the head. Understand if they can’t be free forever but they need to be quite affordable. A family of 5 needs 3 boxes minimum - for one round of testing!
