Hello, I am going to be a Junior in high school in the fall and I have a question about CP, Honors, and AP courses. My high school offers honors courses for freshmen and sophomores but I haven't taken any yet. For my Junior year, I am taking one honors course, and an AP course. I plan on taking all honors and AP's senior year and will hopefully get above a 2100 on my SAT, I have an "A" average, and I am very involved inside and outside of my school. I really want to attend an ivy league college, will my CP classes that I took my first half of high school hurt my chances of that happening?

Ivy Leagues prefer students who enroll in harder classes, which seems like a pretty straightforward concept. They want students who challenge themselves and strive for academic excellence etc. However, they also like upward trends. To see that your classes got steadily more difficult as the years went on will reflect positively on you. That being said, if your school does weighted gpas those cp classes may hurt your average (for example, at my school some people have gpas of 4.5+ if they do well in advanced classes but usually under 4 even if they excell in CP classes). So it may be harder for you to get into an Ivy based on that statistic. However, there are always exceptions and if your application stands out with SAT scores, essays, extracurriculars, and AP exams you may have a fighting chance. As a side note, make sure to find schools that you truly like; there are plenty of great schools that aren’t Ivies and some Ivies that may not be a good fit for you, so don’t limit yourself. Good luck with everything!

Thank you for responding, you were very helpful!
