Hello all,
I’m writing this regarding my twin brother’s position. His admission decision to CPP arrived very late (after Chico’s Admitted Student Day, committing to chico, buying apparel, etc.)
His heart was never really set with either school so he could probably be convinced either way.
He has visited Chico two times now and it has grown on him. I think he enjoys the college town feel but one concern would be the student body size.
At both schools, his major is Kinesiology so any information about this specific program at either of the schools would be much appreciated.
We are trying to get down to CPP next weekend for a visit, so hopefully that helps! But obviously, there is more to the decision than just the campus.
Thank you in advance for your help!!
@Gumbymom Do you have thoughts/insight on this?
Does he have Honors at any? Living-Learning community of interest at either one?
Any difference in price or scholarships?
Nope, pretty equal playing fields as far as all those go
He should flip a coin.
If he feels unhappy with the result, now he knows which way he was leaning.
On reputation alone, Cal Poly Pomona has CSU Chico beat! Hands down! There’s not even a College Confidential forum for CSU Chico. Being from Northern California, I’ve always regarded Chico State as a party school and I’d have rather gone to community college than to that school. The “Cal Poly” name carries tremendous nationwide reputation. Chico State is seldom heard-of outside the valley. It’s a clear decision in my mind! Cal Poly Pomona by a long shot!
For a major like Kinesiology they are both fine and offer credible degrees (interestingly, for most majors, both schools have a similar admission threshold). Both are ranked in the top 10 regional public colleges in the West by US News http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/regional-universities-west/top-public
They offer very different learning environments. Chico is a smaller school and much more residential and is surrounded by an isolated college town. That appeals to you or it doesn’t.
CPP is a good school, particularly for engineering disciplines but, it lives in the shadow of CP SLO. It isn’t the school people think of when you say Cal Poly’. Chico has gone to great lengths to tamp down their party school rep ad build its academic cred. Of course parties still happen but, it is nowhere near what it was in the 80s and 90s and pales in comparison to the party scene around UCSB and SDSU.
I wouldn’t let dated perceptions of either school color your decision.
