So far my son has been accepted to Cal Poly Pomona, SDSU (incl. Weber Honors College), and UCSC for Computer Science. He would prefer to stay in SoCal. He seems pretty lukewarm on Pomona, but was wondering if anyone can provide insight into how the SDSU and CPP computer science programs compare.
Additional info:
We will visit UCSC and see if he changes his mind about the location.
He is still waiting to hear from UCI, UCSD, and UCSB. If he gets into UCI, he will probably choose there.
4.27 CSU GPA, 1400 SAT, strong extracurriculars and essays.
My younger son chose SDSU over CPP but more for the social scene rather than the CS program. SDSU did have a few classes on Cybersecurity which were not available at CPP and where he planned to do his emphasis so SDSU had the advantage. He was very happy with the quality of teaching, professors and course choices.
Both programs are ABET accredited (although not required for CS) but the ABET accreditation provides assurance that a college or university program meets the quality standards of the profession for which that program prepares graduates.
One disadvantage other than CPP was our local CSU and too close to home was that CPP was planning to transition from the quarter system to the semester system. SDSU is on semester which he preferred.
Your son really cannot go wrong with any of the schools he has gotten into so far. Best of luck with the UC’s and make sure fit hits all the marks: Academically, Socially and Financially.
Thanks @Gumbymom! I am very grateful that he has good choices in his chosen major. He is keeping his fingers crossed for UCI, but I’m sure that he’ll be happy wherever he ends up.
all of them will provide a solid education. The campus/environment is a lot different. As a student, the average week will include something like 15 hours a week in a classroom, another 15 on homework and labs. That leave 138 hours a week for other stuff. I’d probably pick UCSC because the campus is so cool but, your son wants to be in SoCal - My next choice would be SDSU because it is so residential and fun. CPP is a very good school but, isn’t in the same league as the others on the social front.
