I am not a resident of California but am set on going there for college, which is why i am leaning toward these “cheaper” colleges. I would like to major in mechanical engineering and I was wondering how CSULB competes with either of the cal poly’s in terms of engineering. I’ve also thought of CPSLO but I would like to live in a bigger city for a change. So basically: Which school is better for ME and why? Also, are there any other schools that I can afford as an out of state student pursuing ME?
Both would give you a very good ME education so it will probably come down to location and social scene. If you are seriously considering spending $36-40K/year to attend either school, you really need to visit each campus. The Cal Poly’s are noted for the “learn by doing” philosophy but to be truly honest, I believe this motto applies to all the Cal States. SLO would be the top ranked for the three schools but their ME acceptance rate is below 10% so a very difficult admit. CPP and CSULB are still not easy admits but within reach depending upon your stats.
California publics are really strapped for cash… you will not get any financial aid (except some loans), so you will have to pay full cost, which is $20,000 tuition+fees and at least another $16,000-$20,000 for room/board/supplies/travel.
Note that Cal Poly Pomona is not in LA proper, but about 30 miles to the east.
For mechanical engineering, they are comparable in quality/reputation.
