Cpw?

Is CPW worth it? I was at MIT all summer during RSI, so I know the campus, etc., so should I still go? It costs sort of a lot...

It's definitely a decision you'll have to make, and you certainly don't have to go.

Personally, as someone who didn't go when I was a prefrosh, I'd recommend going -- most people do go, and they meet each other at CPW and decide to do their housing lottery sheets together and room together... if you don't go to CPW, you sort of feel left out a little when you get to campus in August because everybody already has these pre-made buddy groups.

CPW is also a great time to explore living groups before you rank them on your lottery sheet, plus you can visit classes in majors you might be interested in. And get advice on life from all-knowing upperclassmen (it's like CC on STEROIDS). :D

And you won't have to pay for food or lodging the entire time you're here. Just airfare. And you can get in and leave whenever you please, so you could just look for a super-cheapo flight.

There are some really cool events, like dance, singing, and games, planned for us. I would recommend going.

Costs a lot? A round trip ticket to Boston can't cost more than 160 bucks.

Haha, lowofo, some people don't live in cities that are hubs for major airlines! :)

It usually costs me $300+ to fly home to Ohio, since there aren't that many planes that fly into my local cowport.

I mean airport.

God, you live in Ohio! No wonder you attend MIT mollie, they must have felt so sorry for you they just wanted to get you out of there :P ;)

<--- Lives in Michigan

For me the upside of rejection is that the level of snow I have to wrangle with every winter cannot possibly increase. (University of Michigan, yay, its like a half hour from my house).

Depends where you live. It's $1,247 from our town.

I'm going to CPW, I was supposed to pay $450 for my airplane tickets but a family member could find them for free! I don't know how, don't ask me. But the good thing, I'll be there!

hmmm... i might go... are u supposed to bring a parent with you? where do the parents stay (with the host as well?)

You can bring parents, but you don't have to.

Haha, I think parents would have to stay in a hotel -- heaven knows there's not enough room for three extra people in my dorm room. Some hotels with discounts for MIT parents for the weekend are [url=<a href="http://web.mit.edu/admissions/cpw/forparents.html#parking-hotels%5Dhere%5B/url">http://web.mit.edu/admissions/cpw/forparents.html#parking-hotels]here[/url</a>].</p>

I'm most definately going and i'm totally psyched for it!! it should be wonderful, exciting, and informative... check out the link for it, the schedule is obsenely detailed and i'm sure it will make you just as anxious as me to meet everyone, go to some classes, and see the life at mit while its not too stressful for us yet: <a href="http://web.mit.edu/admissions/cpw/%5B/url%5D">http://web.mit.edu/admissions/cpw/</a>
or if not, see you next fall!! :)

As a parent I can vouch for the Boston Marriott Cambridge. It is a 30 second walk from the front door to campus if you can walk at a very brisk pace. And the T stop is between the two. Very convenient. We've stayed there a couple of times. Being so close is nice because parents can catch a quick nap between activities.

If you're driving be aware that if the hotel has a garage (and the one above does), there's usually an additional $20-30 per day charge for the car.

And at the other end of campus ;), I'm rather fond of hotel@MIT. Just the lobby and room decorations (and especially the bedspreads! (viewable in upper left here">www.hotelatmit.com/about-faqs.html))</a>) would have made me want to go to MIT!

Unless you live in Hawaii. Or Alaska. Or out of the country.

Plane tickets from SD cost around 300, but i managed to do it for 450... (Stupid me, I booked the wrong day for the return flight, cost me 170 to change the flight!). I'll be at CPW to see all my MITES buddies and the campus. To the OP, CPW is a way to meet people, but since you did RSI, don't you have an idea of who you want to do the housing lottery with? If I did not decide to come to CPW, I pretty much have an idea of who im rooming with. Nonetheless, CPW is more than just meeting people. I imagine it is way more different than when we were there in the summer.

My ticket from N. Florida is ~$430, and even then only because I'm staying one extra night. For some reason, it was gonna be 50-60 more to return on Sunday... not that I mind staying longer :)

So which site do you guys use to book your tickets? I prefer Orbitz.

Yeah, the schedule usually grows as time goes on.

Also, don't worry if you can't make it to CPW. You do not need to have a roommate in mind! I know plenty of people (me, for example) who never "stapled" with anyone, and we all turned out ok. =)

P.S. I love NJ. I'm going home for spring break and transportation is going to cost me just over $50- round trip.

Laura, how do you travel to NJ? train? bus?

I take Greyhound Bus from Boston to the Port Authority at NYC, which costs $40 round-trip. After that I take Academy bus to the highway intersection that's within walking distance of my house. It's pretty cool. =)

There's also the famous Chinatown bus which costs $30 round trip. Only it drops you off in the middle of Chinatown in NY, and I'd rather just pay ten extra dollars than wander around NY with a bunch of luggage trying to figure out the subway lines in order to get somewhere that can take me home. (If you live in NYC though, that might be the better option.)

Thanks LauraN. sounds good. I'll check it out.
