so who's excited for cpw??? if you went to cpw last year (or before then), is it as much fun as it sounds like? and is it worth the travel time/expenses?

It's definitely worth the travel time and expenses.

Everybody has lots of fun at CPW -- the prefrosh and the current MIT students alike. Ben Jones also has quite a bit of fun. ;)

I don't think I'll be able to attend CPW this year :(. My parents aren't up for the airfare.

I've heard about orientation opportunities the week before classes start though. Do all prefrosh go through that, or is it optional?

Orientation starts about a week and a half before school starts, and all freshmen must attend. Individual events are often optional, but you do a lot of important stuff like picking your residence and picking your classes during orientation, and that's pretty mandatory.

Thank you for the response! :)

During orientation, are we already moved into residences, or do we stay elsewhere?

You'll be in your temp dorm room during orientation, and are encouraged to visit other residences and decide if you want to stay in that dorm or enter the lottery to try to change. And after that's decided... YOU WILL MOVE. Your temp dorm room is, by fiat, not your permanent dorm room, so don't unpack during orientation.
