Cr 500 -> 730

Hello
I am at the school library,
and I currently don't have anything to do,
so I thought I'd write some of my experience with the SATs.
(to give you all some hope)

btw I'm not a very good writer (only got a 8 on my SAT essay :/)
but hope you can all understand what I'm saying....

In my junior year my scores were
Reading: 500
Writing: 550
Math: 700

Which is about average, but since my parents had high expectations,
and since I wanted to raise my scores too, I decided to study :)

My scores improved significantly after studying :D
Reading: 730
Writing: 660
Math: 800

What did I do?

I didn't read the 'newyorker' or other magazines like some people suggested
I didn't even read any novels or classics other than the assigned books
(from english class and Not counting Harry Potter)

what I did read though were the practice passages.
I did a LOT of practice tests for CR.

Doing the practice tests not only get you better at reading,
but it also changes the way you view the questions.
(you can basically see what the answer is going to be. There is no need to use the "TPR" way of "cracking the CR"; I think that's all junk, cuz I just read the passage once and solved the problems, sometimes going back to check)

Do all the versions of Practice tests you can find, and do the blue book.
READ THE SOLUTIONS<<<< Helps you avoid making the same mistake twice.

Vocab<<<<
I used Word Smart I only, nothing else.
I first memorized A's only.
Then I ripped out the A sections and tossed it in the recycling bin.
Then B's, and so on

I didn't even go through the entire book.
I went up to about F's

but as I did the practice passages, I could basically 'feel' the difference in my vocab.
(Idk how, but I guess reading passages improves your vocab :-))

[Writing]
As I said, I am not a good writer so I gave up on the essays blush
but that multiple choice!! You can get better at MP with practice.
Do practice tests - a lot of them.
and when you get something wrong, find out what type of question it is
(is it the singular-plural type question? redundancy question?)
and find out what your weakness is :)
that should help... maybe... maybe not...

In short, just know that your score CAN improve so crack the books ;)
(btw I got CR 500, WR 550 in March 2008 in a practice test
then I got CR 730, WR 660 in October 2008 on the actual SAT)</p>

so good luck to you all....

Great job raising your score =)

which/from where solutions to the BB did you use?

nice improvement.

i have improved in Cr and constantly get 670-700 on practices , in wr i am in the same boat as you, I keep getting 9 on the essay for the actual sat. And for math, no matter how many practices, i do i always make stupid mistakes. at least on the real sat. how did you go from 700 to 800 ?

really good job on the CR improvement ;)

diligency97// Just the solutions in the back; explanations to the problem
SuperMarioJ// I kept getting 710~730 too, but I didn't do any SAT math for about 2 weeks before the test. So on the test day I was able to concentrate fully (since I wasn't worn out by all those practice tests)
I think I got a bit lucky too :-)

Congratulations!

Also what do you mean by "you can basically see what the answer is going to be". I've read many observations similar to yours by others who have repeatedly practiced. I don't get it. Mind you, I have not practiced much. Does the SAT ask the same question over and over again or something, so that the answers "jump out at you" as some people on CC have claimed.

they don't have solutions in the Blue Book I don't think..just the answers right?

Good improvement; ]

Hey, there is hope for me after all!

Oh sorry I got the blue book from a friend of mine. who's parents are tutors
so I had a separate answer book that had all the explanations written...
-_- forgot about that
