CR question

This question belongs to section 3, Jan 2009 test.
If in 50 years' time mosl Bajau are land-bound stock- brokers, what will the sea be to them except somewhere for family outings and expensive water sports? or what use to
future generations is their present intricate understanding of the ocean? If there is a scientific rather than a sentimental answer, it must be one analogous to recognizing the paramount importance of maintaining the diversity of species. The more the world becomes politically, economically, and culturally centralized, the more homogenized its ways of
living, the more the dangers of sameness become apparent.

The statement "If ... species" serves primarily to:
a) question the significance of the evidence presented
b) explaint why the transition of the Bajau from sea to land would be so significant
c) illustrate why the trend toward a homogeneous Bajau culture could actually be promising
d) show how technological advances can inhibit human sensitivities.
e) describe one unique relationship between the Bajau and the ocean.

Can anyone explain to me why the answer is B? I think the transition of the Bajau from sea to land, according to the passage, is detrimental. Why is it significant?

Thanks!

The answer is obviously B. First of all, DO NOT THINK ACCORDING TO YOUR OWN OPINION. The CollegeBoard people set the tests up to make people think their own way instead of according to the text. Remain objective.

Tip: Try to think what the question is asking. In this question, they are asking for the purpose of that sentence. For example, why did the author write this?

Second, try to paraphrase that sentence. “…one analogous to recognizing the paramount importance of maintaining the diversity of species” gives the answer away. The questions before help give a background to what this sentence is saying. The questions ponder about what would happen in 50 years to the Bajau if they become land-bound stock-brokers while using the sea as a vacation resort. What the author is saying in this sentence is that the transition from sea to land would be significant to maintaining the ecosystem of the sea. In other words, the author is trying to explain an effect of this transition. Answer B makes the most sense.
