CR Question

This question was given a difficulty of 5 and it was in a 2007 QAS.

Short passage

When we came home, Aunt Sylvie would certainly be home, too, enjoying the evening, for so she described her habit of sitting in the dark. Evening was her special time of day. She gave the word three syllables, and indeed I think she liked it so well for its tendency to smooth, to soften, She seemed to dislike the disequilibrium of counterpoising a roomful of light against a worldful of darkness. Sylvie in a house was more or less like a mermaid in a ship's cabin. She preferred it sunk in the very element it was meant to exclude.

9, The reference to Aunt Sylvie's pronunciation serves to

A) capture a distinctive regional dialect
B) highlight a double meaning of a word
C) provide an ominous foreshadowing
D) underscore a particular misconception
E) give evidence of a contrary personality

What do you guys think the answer is and why? Also what is being said in the last sentence?

I'm not even studying CR at the moment. I opened the QAS for the hell of it and now I'm curious. Thanks

I would probably go with B, but I could be wrong. It’s pretty late at night and I need some sleep.

B

I have the online course and read this passage. A,C.D,E aren’t supported in anyway. Furthermore, she pronounces evening “eve-n-ing” like “evening or to even something” she liked it for it’s tendency to smooth…

Ps the next answer for the second question is a house that is surrounded by outside elements. It says she likes the house to be sunk in elements it is meant to exclude. A house is meant to keep out outside elements, which she thinks the reverse of. She likes it when a house is sunk in elements it is supposed to keep out. Like a ship cabin should be above water, but in this metaphor it is underwater.

Hope this helps

Sweet, I got this level 5 question right!
