Cr & w

Hey CCers,

After I got my June SAT & ACT scores I've realized that the SAT is better for me.

My problem is that I'm fine with math, but cr and writing killed me on the test.

I got a 1940

720 math (I can bring it up)
620 cr
600 writing (8 on essay)

What strategies do you guys have on how to bring up the CR and writing. What books should I use? What drills would be helpful for me to do to bring it up? Also what are good things to do in the essay to make them stronger?

I really want to get a 2150+ (or a 2250+...it would make my day :D)
I'm mainly stressing on CR cause I know a lot of college look at math and CR

Thanks!

I have the exact same issue. CCers help!

I need help with CR. It is the hardest part.

It isn’t hard to improve in writing.

In my experience, here are the things you need to score higher on essays:

 1. Proof that your example supports your thesis. You most easily do this by showing how things might have been different if your example took a different approach.
 2. Word choice. You need to use 3 or 4 higher level vocab words. Be careful not to use too many.
 3. Transitions. You need them between paragraphs and between some sentences.
 4. Varied sentence structure. You need some long, complex sentences (those that start with a dependent clause) and some short, simple sentences.

To improve in the grammar portion, it’s really about learning the core 20 to 25 errors and then becoming proficient at spotting them and correcting them. Here is a sampling of the most popular errors:

 1. Subject Verb Agreement Errors
 2. Verb Tense Errors (i.e. “is” vs “was” and the presence of two "had"s in a sentence)
 3. Verb Form Errors (watch for verbs ending in -ing that are not really verbs)
 4. Noun Agreement Errors (i.e., “platypuses are the only mammal that lays eggs” vs. “platypuses are the only mammals that lay eggs”)
 5. Pronoun Antecedent Agreement Errors
 6. Pronoun Choice Errors (i.e. I vs me)
 7. Pronoun Reference Errors (ambiguous and implied pronouns)
 8. Modifier Choice Errors (i.e. calm vs calmly)
 9. Modifier Placement Errors (misplaced modifiers and dangling modifiers)
 10. Coordinating Conjunction Errors (and, but, or)
 11. Subordinating Conjunction Errors (although, despite, etc.)
 12. Correlating Conjunction Errors (either…and vs either…or)
 13. Parallel Structure Errors (“he types and will be signing” vs “he types and signs”)
 14. Comparison Errors (comparative degree, double comparisons, and parallelism)
 15. Run-Ons, Fragments, and Comma Splices Errors
 16. Idiom Errors (“right on that moment” vs “right at that moment”)

I suggest working through the Official SAT Study Guide and categorizing each Writing question by error type. You will start to see patterns emerge quickly.

As for CR, well, it’s a much bigger beast and will take longer to improve. It can certainly be done, though.

my daughter improved her CR score 70 pts in 8 weeks (620-690). She used the blue book (by the college board and the online coarse ) and timed practiced alot. She did vocabulary words write before she went to bed for 5 days a week for 8 weeks. Her increase put her at the next level. Good luck.
