Is it possible to cram for the AP English Lang exam?
I have a few days left, how do I get a 4?! (and I didn't take the class)

I find this a very difficult exam to prepare for. Taking a class doesn’t really help; all you need to learn are some stylistic terms and perhaps some vocab. Unlike with the AP US History exam which you would fail if you took it at the beginning of the year without any knowledge of history, you can do fairly well on this exam without much preparation, that is, depending on your analysis skills.

Actually a class helps you a lot if your teacher is good enough. My teachers for Lang and APUSH were amazing and helped improve my essays by 2-3 points. They even conferenced with everyone after every essay if they wanted to. I did well on the tests and I can only thank them for it. If your teacher sucks, I suggest sitting and writing FULL essays. Don’t just think about it. Just write lots and lots. It’s really all the test is. And the MC is a matter if you’re good at reading passages and answering the questions or not. You usually can’t improve on that until years…

Taking the class only doesn’t help if you have a pretty terrible teacher. My teacher’s great, so I can attest to some of her methods.

Practice answering the prompts in a full, clear way. If you go off-topic, you are unable to even get a 5*. Answer the prompt however, and use basic rhetorical devices like tone, mood, literary devices, etc, combined with some analysis and decent writing skills, and you can get at least a 7.

MC - really similar to SAT II Literature, and it’s a stoked version of both Writing and CR. Again, analysis and pacing with some understanding of the stylistic devices are what’s required.

*on the individual essay itself.

Two of my friends didn’t study at all: one got a 3; the other, a 4. They took it without any preparation.

While a good teacher may help you to an extent, the AP english language exam is not something you can study for. You are either a good writer/reader or you are not.

Again, not true at all. Many people in my class were not exceptionally competent at English, by my teacher’s standards, but they still followed the advice that I listed above, and are able to score fairly well on practice tests.
