crappy english class: another W or stick it out?

Okay, this is going to be a long one. Sorryyy (and I hope it makes sense, I'm sick and feverish at the moment!)

Hi. I already have four Ws on my transcript for various reasons. Three in my first semester (fall of 07, ended up taking a year off) and one last fall (ended up taking the semester off again). Right now I'm only taking seven units. Three of them are for an English class. It's the lit class you can take after freshman comp.

I normally love English and really excel in it, and I know I can get an easy A in this class. However, by staying in it, I feel like I'm wasting my time and not being challenged at all. The semester is halfway done (eight weeks), and we have not written a SINGLE essay. We haven't even finished a book. We've spent three weeks discussing writing a thesis statement, which every single one of us had to cover thoroughly in our previous freshman comp classes (no one can sign up for this course without having taken it). It's like the teacher has no clue what the class is supposed to be about. Literature and critical thinking, not intro to essay writing! I've talked to some other students in the same course with other teachers, and they're not experiencing this at all. I know it's weird to want more work, but I really just want to be an educated, well-rounded person, and I feel like I'm being cheated out of that. Especially since I gained SO much from my last amazing but challenging English class, and know that I can do that again. I'm also afraid of not being prepared for the classes I'll take after I transfer. The professor is a nice guy, but either inexperienced or preoccupied by something other than teaching our class.

Thoughts? Stick it out and let my education suffer, or take another W, which won't look so good on my transcript? And yes, I do want to go to grad school someday. Thanks so much in advance for any answers :)

You serious?

Take the A and worry about catching up later.

Wahhhhhhhhhhhh!

What’s with the snarkiness? Isn’t the point of going to school to learn? :(

admire your thots. i would take that “A” if i were you.

I understand the original poster’s dilemma, but I would take an A over a W.

If you ever want to get to a point where the english will challenge you, you have to get through the stuff that doesn;t.

Take the A. Dont be dumb. What is your GPA? If it isnt a 4.0 then you are even more dumb…Why wouldnt you want to take this opportunity to boost your gpa?

Save those W’s for emergencies. Dont go crazy with those W’s. Too many W’s will put you on academic renewal!

Have you heard of Rate my professor? Look the prof. up before you enroll next time. I use rate my professor every semester and it has never let me down.

Get with the program! ha. JK. but yeah…Dont drop the class!

Take the A and take the class again with another teacher if you later decide the material was important.

OR why not just take the syllabus from your friends’ class and do their assignments for them.

I meant that a lot of W’s will put you on academic probation… No bueno.

Im sorry but this comes off very snobby and naive.

Being smart in school means knowing how to play the game…Something I learned a little late. Just get the A…if you are not prepared for your next english class then it will be all the more challenging…something you seem to love.

I totally agree with lbc123. Hit the nail on the head with that post. :)

On your app, make sure to put down why you got that W in that English class.

I’m sure the UC admissions would understand.

But seriously, tough it out, there are plenty of other opportunities in the future to satisfy your intellectual desires. You’re not the only one here who took an easy class.

Heck…I picked easy english classes on purpose! That’s how it goes. That’s what community college is about. Putting in minimal effort to get the best grades possible. I am kidding…sort of…

To answer some of the comments: I have a 3.97 (my only B ever was in a one unit lab, so it will continue to rise); I’m not worried about my GPA. It was never an issue. My question was more “Is it that bad to get another W?” This is also the last English class I’ll ever need, so it’s not like something better is coming. But I guess I’m the crazy one here and I’ll stick with it. Thanks for all of your replies.

To lbc123- Snobby and naive… why is it snobby or naive to want to learn? I’m not someone who is in school just to have a good GPA and get a degree. I want to learn and grow. I was the other way around when I got out high school, but I took some time off and my point of view changed. I see the point of your “playing the game,” but not everyone is looking for the same things in life.

Wow. just wow.

Of course its not snobby and naive to want to learn…but the idea of dropping a class and getting a W just because its too easy is absurd and I feel like your trying to show off.

You are basically saying you are too smart for the class. Its also a bad idea in the long run…A high gpa with a lot of W’s makes it seem like you just dropped any class you werent going to get an A in.

take the A

Well, coming onto a forum where I don’t know anyone and anonymously posting for advice hardly sounds like showing off to me. I mentioned in the original post that the prof is not teaching at the level of the entire class, not just me. I’d say most of the kids are going nuts out of boredom and the rest are either not showing up or leaving after attendance. It’s a four hour night class. Sometimes people genuinely want some input, why assume the worst?

Anyway, like I said… I’m going to stay in the class and thank you to everyone for the replies.
