Continuation school, joined Marine Corps, earned 3.76 at ccc, headed to major university.

Yeah I never even took any sat's or whatever the others, i mean i almost didn't graduate.

but I got into ucsd ucsc ucd ucla and am starting at ucb next week, hs doesn't matter at all... i mean nothing will hurt you

"Furthermore, the wretched and testing process of transferring made working toward a 4.0 at Brown seem painless."

that's good to hear :)

congrats mellowcrazy!

I'm in a similar position; perhaps there's hope for me yet.

frrrph is my hero.

1.44 gpa in high school

enrolled in city college right afterward and a year later, managed to get a 3.71 after 35 units

applying to usc, nyu, and ucs this fall

hey, guys im in a simliar situation, except my reasons aren't primarily due to slacking off. I had(don't know if i still do now) a learning disability in high school so my grades suffered. But i had pushed myself very hard and ended up with a 3.9 in a JC. I currently im planning to apply to (rice, wustl, cornell, cal..)
and maybe some more ivys. hey can some of u guys tell me my chances

here are my stats http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=382414

holy crap 1.44 gpa!!

I sucked a** in high school with a weighted GPA of 2.56 and no SAT scores. I took a few years off, did some military stuff, went to two CC's and got a combined GPA of about 3.6. Rejected from top choice Georgetown (due to HS transcript, stupid IMO) but accepted at second choice George Washington University! I'm happy and consider it a success as I never in a million years would have been admitted as a freshman.

PS - I got a fantastic financial aid package too which is cool as a transfer student.

very inspiring Timberland! Thanks for sharing :D

Great story, SmileDarling. And great attitude - no one school is the end-all and be-all. Good for you for not being fixated on your first choice. Good luck at GWU.

Thanks for all those who have shared.

I had a friend with a 1.74 and went to community college but ended up transferring to a nice liberal arts school in the east. He didn't do well on his SATs so he improved them last year. He's been doing well

I had pretty decent high school stats, 3.7 GPA W, 3.5 UW, never took any AP's just a couple honors, 25 ACT and 1200 SAT. Got into a decent state college and have so far pulled a 3.75 GPA retook the SAT and received a 1320. Looking to transfer to some target schools for IB.... wish me luck...

I am success story...although my story isn't as impressive or inspiring as others here

I was a horrid student my fresh/soph years in high school. My GPA was a putrid 2.9 at a public high school, which put me in the bottom half of my class. My dad, a Yale grad, was almost ready to disown me. I knew I was better than this. From kindergarten, my parents and I were told that I was gifted. I had the highest standarized test scores in the state of Ohio in 5th grade, or so I was told. Middle school was also fine, but I stunk up my underclassmen years in HS.

In reality, I was just a slacker in high school. I didn't have a philsophical objection to work or a rebellious attitude. It's disgusting to say, but it was pure sloth that resulted in me getting bad grades. This included D's in biology and geometry. Yikes.

I started to turn it around my junior/sr year and managed a 3.7 both years. I think part of my academic psyche was damaged by my bad performance in my soph/jun year because I only got a 28 ACT, which probably could have been a lot better had I studied or had a little more confidence in my abilities.

Anyway, I went to a small LAC for my first year of college without any intention to stay. I got a 3.8 my first semester and a 3.95 my second. I was able to transfer to the University of Wisconsin as a sophmore. The great thing was, I had 12 AP credits and some "extra" credits that transfered from my first college's language program. I had 44 credits my first semester of soph year, nearly a full semester. ahead of where I needed to be to graduate on time. It was a good feeling to finally be on the top of my game after so long.

Your story is an important one, Sardc. I'll bet a lot of readers can relate to it. Probably more so than an "I was a 1.0 in hs, and now am at Harvard Phi Beta Kappa." Stories don't have to be extreme to show how possible it is to make a course correction during or after high school.

Thanks for posting it

2.6 high school ------> 3.7 college -------> Cornell University

^Wow! How did you do that?

I hope your major wasn't like fishing or anything...unless you're passionate about it.
