Creating a major at alabama

I really want to major in biochemistry, but Alabama doesn’t list it as a major. I know that you can create your own major and I was wondering how difficult it is to do. Would it be the same as double majoring in biology and chemistry or would it require less hours so that I could also take a minor in something else?

There is something called “New College” at Bama where you can create your major.

[Home | New College](New College – College of Arts & Sciences)

I think would want to look ahead to the career you might want and “backtrack” into the classes that would get you your desired job. HTH

New College does let you create your own major, but if you have a lot of AP classes, that may become an issue since NC has some classes for Core. I’m not sure if you can have those waived if you already have APs.

If you’re premed, then I don’t recommend double majoring unless it really won’t require too many extra classes or classes that you won’t get A’s in. Your BCMP GPA is very important as well as your cum GPA for med school apps.

One option is to major in one, and minor in the other.

Let me look over both majors and see if there’s something that might work better.

I know that both Bio and Chem depts offer BioChem classes that are the same.

I’ll be applying to the honors college. I am also interested in Spanish. I am sort of confused about the new college. I want to be challenged in college, but I don’t really know how difficult double majoring would be.

[Department of Biological Sciences < The University of Alabama](http://courseleaf.ua.edu/artssciences/biologicalsciences/#majortext)

After quickly looking over both the bio dept and the chem dept, I think that if you’re premed, then do:

Biology major which includes most/all of the premed prereqs, including biochem…but you might want to also take biochem II (offered in chem dept)

Do the BioTech concentration and/or the Health Professional concentration. I wonder if they’d let you “pick and choose” here and create your own concentration?
