Creating a major of your choice

Dear all,

I was wondering two things:

1). At Dartmouth, if you get admitted, is it true that you can essentially "create" or design your own major of choice? OR, does this mean that you can tweak a major's requirements to make it different?

2). Is the music program at Dartmouth worth looking into for somebody interested in a career in music?

3). ok, i lied!! I have three things. IF, and only if, you can create or partially design a major at Dartmouth, and the music major is not worth looking into, could somebody MAKE their own music major in a sense?

Thanks ^_^

anyone? this couldn't be too hard to answer (i'm not speaking for myslef)

Jeremy - within parameters a student can create their own major and the music program at Dartmouth surely provides a student the means to take his or her interests in many directions.

and these articles about recent seniors interesting:

Thank you SO much ohmadre. Well, the whole post was for myself but I didn't want to address myself. I wanted it to be general. Nonetheless, thank you very much for the response ^_^

just "make" your own employer...

so if you can just make a major...then does that mean i could still possibly major in finance, even though there is no listed finance major at dartmouth?..or is that too much of a stretch?

Too much of a stretch. You can build a major from existing ones/classes, but you can't just pull one out of thin air. Finance stresses more real-world application and less liberal arts expansiveness. With that said, you could prepare yourself with a background ready for finance either way... is it that important that your major officially says "finance"?

no, but what sort of a background would you suggest in that case? should i still look into building a new major?
