Creating a schedule

Does it matter what you pick July 20, or will you easily be able to change everything at orientation? And if it does matter, does it matter if you add classes earlier in add/drop period, (first come first serve)? And you do get to pick the classes times/professor?

Also, would any engineering upperclassmen be able to post a full schedule for the whole four years? I found a guide to the graduation requirements, but it's pretty hard to visualize. I'm trying to gauge if it matters if I take extra classes now so that I can take certain electives later, graduate early, or study abroad.

Thanks.

well, you want to get the best possible schedule right now to avoid the whole “wake up at 6 in the morning and try to beat all 13000 people at cornell trying to add/drop at the same time” BS that happens every add/drop period.

you can still change your classes though during add/drop. keep in mind that the add period lasts 3 weeks and the drop period lasts 6 weeks. you can pick from whatever slots are open - class times AND professors are up to you, as long as the slots are open.

When it says ‘staff’ for instructor, does that mean they haven’t decided the prof yet?

I have 2 classes left in the spring yippee!

Thanks for posting your full schedule (more people can do this too).

There’s no way to pick FWS yet, right? How can we plan our schedule around it if we don’t know when the FWS we’re interested in are available?

Only a sophomore, but this is what my schedule for last year looked like:

Freshman fall: [Schedulizer: Fall '08](http://cornell.schedulizer.com/J57VI1)
Freshman Spring: [Schedulizer: Spring '09](http://cornell.schedulizer.com/9TJHF3)

Why are freshman spring schedules loaded with more credits?

Is a schedule with 20+ credits manageable?

hoonose:
How did you like Totally Awesome Math and
the FWS: Writing in Mathematics?

I’m thinking about taking both, just looking for some insight.

A much better way to do this is to go here

[Cornell Engineering : Engineering Handbook 2008](http://www.engineering.cornell.edu/student-services/academic-advising/engineering-handbook/2008/index.cfm)

go down to “Major Programs” and click in yours. There are charts that show about what you take each semester.

Totally Awesome Mathematics was an awesome course. It’s a lecture series. Each week there’s a different lecturer, teaching a different topic at a fairly elementary level. It was quite interesting learning all the different topics without the pressure of having to worry about being graded. You do have to do the homeworks and discuss them on the tuesdays, which is the bad part of the course. These were kind of boring, but necessary for attendance. Homework was just marked for completion, so you don’t have to be right at all. Here’s the site from last year for some reference:
[Math 1600](http://www.math.cornell.edu/~web1600/)

As for the FWS, I highly recommend it. The guy who teaches it (Mircea Pitici) is really cool. It wasn’t highly demanding, and the writings assignments were fun and thought-provoking. The readings were interesting, though I will admit I may have started skimming some of them by the end of the semester.

@vivace, you are my hero. pretty much, you’ve done exactly what I want to do, stocking up early years and then going on a study abroad. how was the workload for you in freshman year though?

freshman fall was my worst semester so far gradewise :frowning: . I think I was a little over confident in one of my classes so that didnt’ turn out so well and I didn’t really get CS until the very end (when it was too late). If I were to do something different, I would done one less class 1st semester freshman year and taken another class 1st semester sophomore year.

I shoudl also mention I took one class at home over the summer (math 293) after my freshman year.

Really? was it easy to transfer the credit? on the cornell site it says that math 2930 is a unique class that most other colleges dont have an exact equivalent for…otherwise, i want to do the same thing

The class I took was transferred just fine, but it is true that most diffeq classes aren’t so easy. 294 would definitely be easier to transfer.
