Creating a whole new wardrobe

ericatbucknell--

If all you buy are polo's you will fit in just fine at bucknell. Polos and some sort of pants and you will be set and fit in everywhere. . . everything else is just gravy.

bearsoflife has esp...amazing

the op says revamp his wardrobe...after seeing how some of the HSers in my city dress, I say good for him!!!

I think he talked about those brands, perhaps, because those stores have a certain relaxed preppy look, that at first glance looks easy and not too much

One thing to watch for is something my Ds hate on guys- too much of one brand all together AND to many brands all together at the same time- an AF sweater, a Polo oxford, a RL sweater, you get my drift, so its best to not have emblems on everything

So, if there is a logo or emblem on a shirt, the sweater shouldn't have one, if the polo has a little pony, the jacket shouldn't, so watch that little emblems aren't on eveything you own

Some basics every guy should have:

A black sweater, a nice blazer, a couple of ties, a nice dress shirt (not necessarily white) that works with blazer, a nice white dress shirt, a pair of black pants (can go from job interview, to nice dinner, to funeral)

These are some basics to go along with all the regular college clothes

Also, a watch, a good wallet, a nice belt- those are timeless

It is not fake to want to sharpen up ones style, some people are in highschools where ALL you see are jeans, tshirts, and those jeans are so saggy, and the girls, don't get me started

And some people see college as a way to grow up, start over, make a good impression, and dress a bit more maturelly then they were able to in hs...

polos every day is very boring. especially at a preppy school such as UVa, you see tons and tons and tons of polos with ponies and alligators everywhere. But if you invest some money in a beautifully made oxford shirt, and/or a V-nech sweater, and/or an old school sportcoat, you'll stand out, in a good way. i really wish there are more people wearing linen, madras and seersucker stuff, instead of solid/striped polos every damn day.

"One thing to watch for is something my Ds hate on guys- too much of one brand all together AND to many brands all together at the same time- an AF sweater, a Polo oxford, a RL sweater, you get my drift, so its best to not have emblems on everything"

VERY well said. In fact I REALLY wish Ralph Lauren can take off their stupid logo/stop putting them on everything. Quality clothing doesn't have to have some emblem to indicate the quality. However, Lacoste/ralph lauren wouldnt have sold so well without the help of those logos. The really timeless stuff (Brooks Brothers, J.Press...etc) rarely has logo on it. One of the reasons that I like J.Crew a lot is their lack of logos.

bears, i really don't care for khaki's on many people. whenever my boyfriend wears them i just shake my head.. but he's an adult and can wear whatever he wants to.. i'm sure he shakes his head at some of my clothes too :)

i do like polo shirts though. i wear girl polo-esque shirts quite often. in fact, i'm wearing a brown one now. and i think they look good on guys too, except i don't like when guys pick the ones with crazy patterns.. lines shapes etc.. i like solid colors.

For starters I want to give my opinion on whether this is "fake". I know that many guys I have seen in hs are extremely lost when it comes to fashion and how to put things together. If one of those "lost" guys wants to learn how to make a better impression, then go for it! As a girl, middle school is when I learned the ways of fashion. i was not trying to be fake and i still chose clothes that I was comfortable in but I did take tips from girls I thought looked really nice. it is not fake to try to improve your image as long as you are happy with that image and it reflects yourself.

Now on to the question. i would not waste money at A&B or American Eagle because their clothes are really cheap and will fall apart. You will and up having to spend more money to replace clothes that are falling apart. Now banana republic had really nice clothes along with Ralph Lauren, Armani Exchange, and nausica. they may be slightly more expensive but it is worth it because guys who wear it look hot without looking like they spend too much time in front of the mirror. I do agree with others that you need a girl with you when you shop but do not brin a girl that is overly pushy and has extremely different taste than you do. She is there to just help with the details because you should pick out the overall look.

gee my parents are giving me 800.00 and shooing me out the door. But i agree with the people who said to wait until you arrive on campus unless you already feel the fashion vibe

I usually only wear Lacoste,Hollister and AE polos and i get me Jeans from AE and anywhere that sells high quality jeans. I discrimnate not on small stores.

Break your budget up into sections, shirts, jeans, underwear, etc and try not to spend all 2,000 on clothes, unless mommy and daddy are super filthy rich, you're going to need some money to have arounds.

oh and bring a girl that you trust shopping with you, she'll know what looks good on you.

Go to Abercrombie, Hollister, or American Eagle. Buy cargo shorts and pants (with belts), horizontal-striped polos, and flip flops. I can vouch that their stuff is good quality. Totally not a waste of money, and you'll be much more attractive.

Oh, and I want to be on anyone wearing the "Jake" cologone from Hollister. Get that, too.

Instead of shopping at sh***y stores like Abercrombie and Holliester, you really should shop at Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers and J.Crew. NOW we are talking about quality. I mean, 2000 is a lot, better go for quality.

yes. a&e, abercrombie, and hollister all suck. you are in college now. dress like it.

i <3333 J Crew. I always take guy friends shopping there (theyre clueless) and just have them by some of their basic cotton shirts and they're so soffft and cuddly. if you want like axe commercial effects from the girls at your school, i'd definitely invest in a couple of those :)

not everypiece has to be expensive, you can get some great sweaters, some basic black tees, and don't snipe, at mervyns...walking around in clothes that were bought because of brand is so obvious

macy's also is a good place to go, especially now, as father's day is coming up, you can get brand names on sale...

I bought my H the best lacoste sweaters last year (no logo) for 1/2price

So go shopping NOW for some stuff, the father's day sales area goldmine

what is mervyn's?

we had a mervyn's when we lived in cali and didn't have one when we lived in ohio/ct. I guess it's kind of like kohls... except out west.

we used to have mervyns but it went out of business. its somewhere in between sears, jc penny, and kohls.

haha metrosexual thread #2

Don't go for AE or abercrombie. The only people wearing that stuff are frat boys. They really look like they just wanna be in high school again when they wear that stuff. Some good stores for young adults:

Gap
J. Crew
Express
Macy's (Has a good selection of brands)

This is a very good topic. As a matter of fact, today I was thinking about my shopping spree for my whole wardrobe in college. Do you have any tips for girls? Guys what clothes do you REALLY like on women?

Mrnewbooty, make sure you also set aside money for when you want to look good and fresh at nightclubs. ;D

nerdyuscgurl, you should start another topic for the "girl tips," that way the two topics dont, you know, kill each other...
