Creating an Onyen

Congratulations to those who were accepted EA and plan on attending.

If you are creating your onyen, please note that you don't have to use the one they suggest. Make up your own and the system will let you know if it's available.

Create a password that is meaningful to you, but difficult for anyone else to figure out. You must use the configuration that is provided, minimum of 8 characters, and combination of letters, at least one number and a special character. Please be more creative than tarheel#1

Please remember that this is not only the "only name you'll ever need", but one that will stay with you forever. It's really, really hard and a pain to change your onyen.

There are many people on campus today who created an onyen as an undergrad and now are working there and are "stuck" with the same one all these years later...so be careful and make it something that will last awhile, as in forever...

Once we are accepted how do we create an onyen?

edit:

Never mind I figured it out. : )

Do many people use the recomended onyen name?

I’m SOOO excited I got in
But I want to wait to see where I get in every where else first.

So if I click the “accept” button, am I signing on to go to UNC?

I guess what I’m asking is: if I make an Onyen, am I committing??

^I have the same question.

Secret Asian Man:
I clicked it and it asks if you accept.
then you click accept, then it asks you
how you want to pay.

there were 3 options,
and I wasn’t sure what to pick… so I’m sorta…
??? questions??

Is there any reason why we shouldn’t sign up for an onyen yet? (That is as long as we’ve commited to attending UNC)

I wouldn’t create an onyen until your sure you are attending.

I’ve already sent in my enrollment fee! I am pretty commited.

from UNC website:

Create your ONYEN and UNC email account. The Onyen, which stands for the “only name you’ll ever need” is your passport to your UNC email account and other UNC services. After creating your Onyen, the UNC Guest ID that you previously used to log into your MyUNC page will be deactivated. Instead, you’ll log into MyUNC with your Onyen and new password. We’ll send important information, including information about your financial aid award, through your UNC email account, which you’ll be able to access through your MyUNC page after setting up your Onyen.

So you don’t have to be admitted to make one.

I thought you needed a university id number to get one?

You can’t make one without a PID, and you can’t get one of those until you are admitted (if you haven’t received your packet in the mail yet it will be in your financial aid letter).

Which one should I use: jtaylor1, jinnesst, or jinnesse@unc.edu. My name is jinnesse taylor. Any other suggestions?

Do they let you create original ones? Can you try jinesse by itself? The whole email address would be sort of annoying if it were your username, but at the same time, it’s pretty cool to just have your name.

I’m a freak and I’ll probably pick something totally random.

I’d say either jinesse or jinessetaylor. they are the most simple ones, but the first is a little less professional. I’m gonna do either camico or carolineamico… nobody steal mine! haha

From [Information Technology Services](http://its2.unc.edu/itrc/chgid/) :

So I think jinessetaylor would be out, sucks for me too because I have a long name.

My problem is the character limit, max 8 char. I ended up with the generated one which is the first letter of my name and then the first 7 letters of my last name, my last name is too long to get the whole thing in there.

i am convinced every variation of my name and initials is taken.

Me too. I have a very common last name.

Do you guys know if it is possible to create an account without accepting the admissions offer?

yes. creating an onyen does not equal committing to UNC!
