Creative Writing schools

Where do you reccomend? So far, just going by internet searches, I like Sarah Lawrence, Vassar, Columbia/Barnard (?), Carnegie Mellon and Johns Hopkins. They're all in or near cities, which matters to me. Does anyone know if the programs at these schools are any good of know of any other colleges I've overlooked? Also, how possible is it to get good money from these places? I've probably got a 4.0 or better as a culmulative GPA (so far, just finished sophmore year) and am very involved in a few extracurriculars, will be doing the IB program and volunteering. No test scores yet (obviously).

I know Iowa is good for that

Amherst College and Middlebury come to mind.

Hi, I'm also interested in creative writing and will be pursuing an English major with a focus on CW at Wellesley next year. You should really consider wellesley esp. if you're looking into Barnard (which means you're open-minded about Women's colleges).

I would also look into Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore, Williams, and Kenyon. University of Iowa has a top-notch Creative writing MFA program. However, for undergraduate creative writing studies, I would highly suggest some of the other schools I mentioned. Also, what specific genre of creative writing are you looking into? This might help to narrow down some of your choices. I also considered applying to Middlebury and Sarah Lawrence due to their very strong writing programs.

Be sure to enter creative writing contests/honors such as Princeton's poetry prize or Kenyon's creative writing annual contests for high school students. These will help you get the foot in the door. Just some thoughts, hopefully they'll help you out!

Thank you all so much. :-) Tankini, do you have links to information about those contests online? Or know of any others?

I really don't think I could go to Iowa... ducks No offense meant to anyone, but it's just not my kind of place and it's too far.

I'll definetly look at Bryn Mawr (Forgot to list that one, I have a friend going there for writing), Amherst and the others.

Tankini, I don't do poetry at all. I'm working on a novel and a play, occasionally write short stories. Does that help?

Thank you all again. It's so nice to find a website like this where people actually try to give advice.

ETA- Does it help your application to list that you went to a liberal arts college's summer writing workshop for high schoolers?
