Creative Writing

Does Barnard have a creative writing program/major? Also, are there any drawing courses and archery as an intramural sport? How would you rate these classes?

I’m just an applicant, so I don’t know about drawing and archery, but no, Barnard doesn’t have a Creative Writing major. Columbia does, though, so you could take it there (I believe that’s possible, can someone correct me if I’m wrong?).

Barnard offers an English major with a concentration in creative writing. The details about it can be found here:

[Barnard College Department of English](http://www.barnard.edu/english/requirements.php?id=concentrations#writing)

churchmusicmom is correct, and for what it’s worth, Barnard’s English dept is excellent. Famous alumnae writers include Anna Quindlen, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Erica Jong.

If you go to the Barnard Catalogue and select Art History ([Barnard College, Online Course Catalogue](http://barnard.edu/catalog/depts/arhb.php?tab=courses)), scroll down to the section entitled Studio Courses in Art. There are a variety available. I never took any of these classes, so I can’t comment on them.

Archery is a varsity sport, but not an intramural sport at Barnard. The intramural sports are: basketball, indoor soccer, tennis, lacrosse, and volleyball. ([Intramurals | Barnard College Department of Physical Education](http://www.barnard.edu/fitbear/intramurals.htm)). There is, however, an archery club at Columbia which Barnard students can join ([Columbia Archery Club - FAQ](http://www.columbia.edu/cu/archery/club/faq.html)). Columbia’s intramural sports (which Barnard students may join) are Basketball, Dodgeball, Volleyball, Soccer, Kickball, Flag Football, and Softball.
As a writer and Barnard mom I want to comment and say I think Barnard’s approach is correct. I don’t think schools should be minting creative writing majors who are not also English majors. At this point, Barnard has the better track record.

Everything I’ve heard about Barnard and writing has been amazing. Which is why I’m applying. Ha. :]

Oh awesome! I love the replies i’m getting.
@mythmom I’m planning on being an English major but I want a strong emphasis on creative writing because I want to be a novelist/journalist.

@Dolphins and @Anyone who might know the answer

Do you have try out to be on varsity Archery? Because I’ve never done it before and would love to give it a try in college.

@ohheyolivia
Yeah, I saw that Columbia had some creative writing courses that undergraduates could take, but it isn’t a major or anything. Most of those are for graduate school students.

I’d assume you have to try out, but I don’t actually know, sorry!

Galaxy, if you’ve never done archery before and just want to try it out - why not simply enroll in an archery PE course? Barnard requires 2 semesters of PE to graduate, and archery is one of the options offered – see [Courses | Barnard College Department of Physical Education](http://www.barnard.edu/fitbear/courses.htm) – so you could sign up to take a class… and then if you like it or think you are particularly good at it, try out for the competitive team later on.

My good friend took archery and enjoyed it very much. Sorry that’s not too specific, but it’s a vote for the archery PE class. Also, I have applied to be in a creative writing class next semester. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the classes and professors.

There have been several other threads here pertaining to the Creative Writing program, suggest do a search here if you care to read more.
