Creative Writing

Hey, so I’m currently a Freshman that enjoys writing creatively. I’ve been wondering if I should take an online course on Creative Writing, concurrently with my school work. I’m also taking another online course concurrently with school right now, so I’m a little hesitant. Is there any advice as to whether I should do it? It looks as thought it takes about 2-4 hours per week for around 20 weeks. Thanks.

I don’t think you really need to take a class.

Just make sure that you continue writing on your own. Creative writing just can something you do on your own free time.

It might be a better summer activity. Be sure to look into the Scholastic competitions, and see if you can get some things published.

Thanks for replying so quickly! I don’t think that I’m that great of a writer, so I think that a course would be nice. Especially since I want to publish it as a book.

@wontonandrice You don’t have to take an entire course, but if you want to learn more craft, I’d advise you to just keep reading A LOT, and watch writing craft videos on YouTube. Check out the 5 part series “Dan Wells on Story Structure.”

I understand why you want to take the class a lot. Fellow creative writing fan here too! Nice to meet you! I’m really glad to see someone else enjoy writing as well! However, I agree with everyone else here. Unless you can fit it in at your school as an elective, if it is available, I do not think it is worth taking this class online. I think it would make your schedule much easier and overall more efficient if you do not take the class, especially because you are already taking a course online.

Best of luck and have a good day!
