Creative Writing

Hey guys,
Right now, I'm a creative writing major at Emerson College, but I'm thinking of transferring to Ithaca, still to major in writing. I was wondering if I could get any input on Ithaca's writing program? Quality, intensity, etc? Really, anything would be great. Thanks a lot!

Muy bueno. lol. I mean, they have their own department building (which not many of the programs have), and they are really prominent on campus.

Great! I know this is sort of asking for a lot, and I don’t know why you’d know this if you’re not a writing major, but would you happen to know how prestigious the program is?

My daughter is considering applying to both schools (Ithaca & Emerson). Why did you consider leaving Emerson? Did you transfer to Ithaca? If so, what were your impressions in comparison to Emerson?

I’m transferring from Emerson to Ithaca this next semester. Personally, Emerson wasn’t what I wanted in a lot of ways - I didn’t connect with the student body (they were too artsy and pretentious for me) and I wasn’t a huge fan of how Emerson’s writing program is structured. Nearly all of the writing classes in the WLP dept are based on peer-editing and have a really strong creative focus. Don’t get me long, I like being critiqued by my peers, but I don’t think that the classes should rely entirely on that. Also, same thing with creativity - again, I like it, and I like creative writing, but I want the option to pursue noncreative interests as well. If you want examples, compare Emerson’s course catalogue to that of Ithaca’s (although, they don’t have a catalogue posted online - just the courses for each dept listed with the academic programs. It’s a little hard to find, just click around/search the site.)

I hope that helped. Good luck to your daughter!

@thetimewarp - thanks for that information! D is making her final decision. Right now btw Emerson (WLP/Marketing) & Christopher Newport U (English w/ concentration in Writing) here in VA. Cost is one big factor. Right now about $6k difference to attend EC. Other factor is IF she decides she wants to major in something other than WLP or Marketing, EC doesn’t offer options, or if she wants to pursue a foreign lang minor EC doesn’t offer that opt either. I think EC is more prestigious for her major and as a school, but CNU is really up and coming and has a beautiful campus. She’s also been accepted into the leadership program at CNU. Either way, it’s a liberal arts degree and I don’t want her to have a ton of student loans given the relatively low starting salaries of liberal arts grads. She’s accepted to ICs J-school too, but for whatever reason she’s not pursuing going there. About the same cost for her EC or IC. I think IC gives her the best of both worlds btw EC & CNU, but not sure how good for internships. I think Boston would be more suited for that. We haven’t visited IC either after she didn’t seem as much interested. 9 hour drive at $3.75+/gallon not a good idea if the interest isn’t there.

Are you at IC this semester? How’s it going? Was the transfer a good thing for you?
