credit cards.

So how many of you guys have credit cards? I want one so I can buy stuff online. I already have about 1k in a debit account in canada where my dad lives, so I could pay the bills and stuff.

The only one I know of is VisaBuxx, but that's sort of like a debit card (your parents put money in the account) but you can still make online purchases.

I don't know about Cananda, but here in the US, I have an American Express and a Citi AAdvantage card. I usually use the AMEX, unless the place doesn't accept them; otherwise, I rack up AA miles on the Citi card.

The only problem with the AMEX is that it requires a co-signer, I believe.

I have a debit card (my parents got me one because I had about $300 saved up in birthday money, and my parents never take me shopping, so I wanted to buy stuff online). It's in my dad's name and links to his account, but online that usually isn't a problem.

Are you under 18? Could you give me a link to the type of card you have?

I live in the US, but I have a Canadian debit card because I have a bank account up there and I don't have one here.

Really? What company is it? Mine is Bank of Nova Scotia, (even though by dad lives in Ontario lol) but I can't use it online because most only take credit cards. (I'm mostly looking to buy clothes online because my parents don't take me shopping, either.)

^^AmTrust Bank...I'm rather surprised that you say most places don't take debit cards. Unless mine's actually a credit card and I don't know it. It's a Visa.

I have a VisaBuxx -- preloaded but works just like a visa credit card.
Never had a problem with it.
PM me for more information.

Sorry! didn't read all of the above post.

I have USAA, and have had it since I was 10ish, but I think you need to inheirit it. I think it's the only bank that allows kids to have checking (my 11 yr old brother has his own checkbook and everything!). I used to have one that was connected to my parents' account - l think amex? - but then they canceled that. i think you can do that and then your parents put a monthly limit on it.

The only store that I usually buy clothes from that I know takes debit cards is J. Crew. Nordstrom, Polo RL, and Abercrombie don't take debit, unless you can put your debit card info under where it says credit card.

Isn't USAA only for military families?

"USAA proudly serves millions of military members and their families with competitive rates on insurance, banking and investment services."

i thought abercrombie accepted debit.
also, if you get a credit card make sure you pay the bill in full every month on time. you dont want to rack up any debt and/or have a bad credit score in the future.

VisaBuxx doesn't affect your credit score because it's pretty much a prepaid credit card. Your parents take money from their savings/debit account and put it in the VisaBuxx account. I think I'm leaning towards that right now.

Jonathan1, I'm 18. Were you asking about the AMEX or the Citi?

And I'm pretty sure Abercrombie accepts debit.

I have a debit card...and I've never been to a store that didn't accept it (assuming they accepted credit cards)

I have both a credit and debit card. Debit cards are usually visa and so many places accept them, if it's an ATM card then most likely they won't. It's hard to get a credit card if you are under 18 and have no job, I had one at 16 though because I worked and my mom trusted me not to screw our credit up.

I have a debit card but the account is in Canada. I'm not sure if I would want to move the money down here, though.

hahh.. mine was negative 1000 $ a couple days ago.

oyy, shopping. my parents thought that getting one would teach me to be responsible. oops.

My parents got me a debit card because my grandpa wanted to start putting $200 a month into an account for spending money during college, but I've never used it. :p

My money is currently accruing a healthy interest in a CD, and I have no intentions of opening a credit account because I never want to buy anything.

OhmyGodIamsuchnerd

just got a credit card and debit card this week. i turned 18 a few weeks ago. i feel like im getting old.

Any debit card can be used like a credit card if it has a visa or mastercard logo on it. Only the money's taken out of your account on the spot.

My teeny little CD's making 5.1% APY for 1 year. Of course I only accrued like $.50 up until now but anyway it's really cool because it's FDIC insured AND it's making higher than my mom or my friends' CDs.....AND they let you add money to it. I think I'm going to add a little bit more....up to the point where the interest accrued is $9.99 since I don't feel like filing a 1099 which you're obligated to if your interest income is more than $10.
