Credit hour requirements to transfer into UIUC as a sophomore

Hey everyone, I’m currently a freshman at UIC and wish to transfer here for my sophomore year. I plan on majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Science. I’ve received IB credit for Calc 1 and will be taking Calc 2 this semester. I’ll have a total of 16 credit hours this semester.

I believe you need a minimum of 30 credit hours to transfer so I just wanted to know how exactly would I go about getting these credit hours before I need to apply. If I plan on taking 16 hours next semester too, do those count?

I’m from India (although I am a domestic student) so I’ve not had a proper college counsellor (the one in my high school wasn’t very helpful). My IB scores have been less than stellar due to a few subjects and I’m pretty sure my SAT score isn’t good either. I plan on maintaining a high GPA and want to transfer into UIUC for my second year in Fall 2018 and my parents are pushing me towards it as well (understandably so).

Thanks in advance, have a great day!

To be accepted as a transfer into sophomore year, you need to complete 30 hours of college credits before you actually start sophomore year. You apply for such transfer between Dec 15 and March 1 of your freshman year. You will need to provide first semester, freshman year grades and second semester course schedule (to show probable completion of hours and courses required). Be aware that junior year transfers are favored over sophomore year for math and computer science. Also, if attempting to transfer into sophomore year, high school grades and SAT or ACT test score are important. If seeking transfer into junior year (requiring completion of 60 hours before enrollment) college grades become the key to the exclusion of high school performance and test scores.

The math and computer science major is not easy to transfer into. It requires a minimum 3.5 college GPA (and minimum A- grades in math and CS college courses) to even be considered, and depending on applicant pool and seats availabe, a higher GPA may be needed.
