Is it possible to do credit overload( i.e taking more than 16 credits a semester)in Northeastern? How much more do I have to pay if say I wanna take 20 credits per semester? Thanks!!!!

If you’re taking more than 16 because you have to, then it’s free. For example, if you’re taking 4 classes (regular amount), but once requires a lab- then you’ll be taking 17 credits without any extra charges.

But if you want to take 5 classes (four credits each), then you’ll pay for each one, even if you claim you need them to graduate on time, or whatever. I believe it’s over 5,000 dollars for one extra class.

Wow! That’s insane!

EDIT: I found the policy that explains it here:
http://www.northeastern.edu/financialaid/studentaccounts/billingpolicy.html

“Students taking more than 8 credits (Summer half session) or 16 credits (Full semester) will be charged the an additional per credit hour rate for each credit hour beyond the prescribed curriculum for that term.”

Not sure about this. My S, incoming fresh, was given 19 units. The counselor said that is standard for all incoming fresh. I was concerned as I think that’s a lot, but apparently that’s how they do it now.

Like neuchimie said - if it is part of the required curriculum, you are fine, otherwise you have to pay extra.

At orientation we were told that the required freshman or honors one credit courses are freebies along with some others like chorus. The same holds true for things like labs.

It depends on the individual programs - for example, last semester my daughter took 19 credits because her major required it…

19 credits probably means two (or one for hard ones) labs plus intro honors. Maybe three easy labs, or one hard lab (two credits) and one easy.

My first semester, I took 21 credits. A 1 credit lab, a 2 credit lab, a 1-credit intro to college course and 1-credit enhancing honors, plus the standard four 4-credit courses to be full-time. It was all required.

However if I had wanted to take 20 credits by doing FIVE 4 credit courses- then it’d be extra money, despite the fewer credits.

Like neuchimie said, you take as many credits as required by your major. My first semester I took 19 credits, because of 2 labs in addition to my science courses, as well as a 3 hour a week “intro to biology” course, which every freshman will have based on their major.
