Hey guys I've been admitted to Berkeley as an undergraduate mechanical engineering student. I am taking Maths BC and both the Physics. Wanted to know how many credits do i earn if i get a 3, 4 or 5 and how exactly does it work?

Thanks

Actually a complex issue. AP credits count in various independent ways.

provide unit credits which can (at your option) be counted towards the minimum total units required for a degree.

can be used to waive the need for certain classes

can be used to satisfy pre-requisitions for more advanced classes, allowing you to skip the basic classes

they are considered in the formula for assigning registration time slots - those entering with AP credits tend to get earlier registration times that peers with otherwise identical numbers of units taken at Cal, thus have slightly higher priority for registration.

For use 1, each college has a list of the AP classes and the units you earn given a 3, 4 or 5 result. Here is the link to the handbook that has this listed starting on page 7, plus all the other important stuff you need to know about degree requirements and policies. http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/advising/advising07-08.pdf

Short answer - for Math BC, a score of 5 earns you 5.4 units and waives the first year of calculus (math 1a and math 1b). Less than 5, they will evaluate credits on an individual basis. Since an AB test score of 3 or higher earns 2.7 units and waives the first calc semester (math 1a), it is not clear what would happen with less than 5 on BC other than you may have to take the math 1b second semester of calc. For the Mechanics C physics test, a score of 5 will earn 2.7 units and waive the first semester of introductory physics (phys 7A). No mention of any other physics AP exams.

For some majors, a class that is in general waived due to AP results might not be acceptable and that department can require you take the course at Cal or have an approved class at another college. These are spelled out for each potential major you are considering, in the handbook or on the web site for the department that offers the major.

COE doesn’t have a published AP credit chart online. The best answer you can get is:

Q. What AP tests should I take (or will I get credit for)?

A. The College of Engineering gives AP credit for most AP tests. Depending on the test and score, students will get UC credit and/or College of Engineering subject credit.

You should probably consult with the ME department directly to find out.

As I said, the handbook is online and the link I gave above, http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/advising/advising07-08.pdf , works. It comes right from [Current Undergraduates — UC Berkeley College of Engineering](Students - Berkeley Engineering)

Look at page 7 in the publication. It gives the AP credit rules.
