credits needed to transfer?

We are at the very beginning of youngest son thinking he may want to transfer. He is a rising college freshman. He was sure he knew what he wanted to major in until about 2 months ago when he changed his mind & has since been undecided. He now thinks he may have found what he wants to do but of course that major is not offered at the college he is enrolled at.

We have been looking at the website of what he thinks may be his first choice school and it says transfers must have completed 15 college credits before applying & the application deadline for next fall is Dec 1. Of course by Dec 1 he is not going to have 15 credits completed, but I know many people do transfer after the first year and even after the first semester. Does anyone have any insight into how this all works?

Of course we are at the very beginning of the process and will continue to research & call schools etc but I thought someone here might know.

Re-read that website carefully. The 15 credit limit may be the cut-off that determines whether or not the applicant is a transfer or a freshman.

Also, there is nothing wrong with deferring enrollment at the original college this fall, taking a gap year or semester, and re-thinking his application list. If he needs financial aid, that would be the best strategy as freshmen aid packages are usually much better than the packages offered to transfer applicants.
